New Chinese "carrier killer" missile shifts balance of power in Pacific. Decline of U.S. power in Pacific?

International news reports say that China's new DF21D missile will shift the balance of military power in the Pacific away from America and into China's favor. The DF21D is a first-of-its-kind long-range hyper-sonic missile capable of readily sinking American aircraft carriers. According to numerous news articles, the U.S. military is absolutely terrified of China's newest military capability because there is no defense against it. Once targeted, the missile can sink any ship within 900 miles.

All United States war planning in Asia has assumed that American carriers could operate unchallenged in the ocean. That assumption is now completely obsolete. The implications are particularly startling for Taiwan and may pave the way for quicker reunification.

How severe is America's rapid decline of power in Asia? When will American troops finally get out of Asia completely?

I read a similar article on Fox News. Fox's conclusion is the new Chinese weapon, "challenges the basic principle of American power projections in the Far East." I tend to agree with them. Look what a single Exocet missile did to the British Navy during the 1982 Falklands War. An accurate defensive missile system completely defeats the capability of even the largest offensive naval force.

I was amused by some of the other answers here, as they seem to live in a dream world. Pro-American zealots stick their head in the sand and pretend the world isn't changing. I can appreciate how hard it must be for Americans to see their 9 year war against a handful of Afghan Taliban grind on endlessly. If America can't defeat a few hundred smelly guys in the desert, then how can they confront the huge modern military of a real country like China?

America only fought the Korean War to a stalemate, America lost the Vietnam War, America failed to oust Saddam Hussein in the Gulf War, America isn't winning the Iraq War, and things look even worse in the Afghanistan War. America hasn't had a clear military victory since defeating Japan in 1945.

    Nope...

Two things, the USN are making the boogey man of China seem bigger to secure more money. This always happens.

In the 1970s the T72 was touted by American Intel (falsely) to be a death machine capable of destroying ALL known Allied tanks and it would take many western tanks to take out a single T-72. The T72 is a death machine.... for its own crew.

Secondly China are playing asymetrically, The Russians and USSR realised in the 1970s they couldn't match military spending at all so went asymetric against our gold plated weapons. Devloping anti tank missiles which cost $50000 to knock out $7million dollar tanks.

Anti helicopter mines which cost $5000 which can kill $6million dollar apache helicopters, SAM systems which cost a fraction of the target.

China is doing the same thing..... they can't afford carriers so build nastier anti carrier weapons instead.

The previous biggest threat was the sunburn missile. It was able to defeat the AEGIS defence system until the USN upgraded to the Searam missile.

The biggest problem is this, simply the anti ship missiles are so much cheaper than the targets. The USS Ronny Reagan for instance will cost upwards of $15Bn USD. You can buy 10000 missiles maybe more for the cost of a carrier. Even if the AEGIS sea ram defence system has a 100% hit rate, it will run out of ammo well before the missile attack is over.

TBH I think the USN are going to upgrade their anti missile systems to solid state lasers, there was a recent USN test changing a CIWS to a laser system and it hit 4/5 targets, when previously if you hear the CIWS fire you jump overboard..

The Dong Feng 21D , ant that the UFO that you'll seen over China . You can see it then . So you can shot at it . It is fast . Is it faster then light . I here that some one is working on some thing that shots light . That's fast , right ? If you shot it 900 miles and it is going "Hyper-Sonic" it can find the carriers .

And planning is what you do when you are not at war . Taiwan will do what Taiwan wants , not what China wants . If China has a 1000 DF21D's Taiwan will still do what it wants to do not what China wants .

And when will American troops get out of Asia , when they want to . You do know they have a map , they can find Asia again .

new weapons are always being tested and improved, and each side has counter measures, no one weapon can shift the total power since everyone is changing constantly.

The idea of a carrier is it is a portable air field, and it can move.

If you have ever seen a carrier task force you would know they have an umbrella of support protecting the carrier from all types of threats.

The U.S. has been developing missiles and anti missiles since World War 2.

Decline of US power is not rapid. It is a gradual withdrawal being performed as the other nations strengthen their defenses against PRC aggression. Re: Effects on Taiwan - I doubt that even 100 DF21D's can sink a whole island of that size.

When Chinese Communist Party of China steals more USA military technology the Communist China will become more powerful because money used not to research new technology, just steal and make military weapon cheaply.

Children it is class time, you to CI. Can you see it? If you can not see it you can not kill it. Period end of the game. Hence a number of aircraft the US owns. If you can see it, you can kill it. Period end of the game. Hence the missile some dummy thinks is invincible. Get as life and a education.

Both China and the US know very well that they need each other and would not afford going to war. There's been similar riples in the past and each time they're able to have it solved.

A weapon system that is yet to be tested and perfected for accuracy has become a threat for US carriers?

    Duh!
