The Catholic Church did not change, add or remove any Old Testament Scriptures.

Protestants have fully accepted each and every one of the 27 books that the Holy Spirit inspired Catholics to select for the New Testament over 1,500 years ago..

The difference in the Old Testaments actually goes back to the time before and during Christ’s life. At this time, there was no official Jewish canon of scripture.

The Jews in Egypt translated their choices of the Hebrew Scriptures into Greek in the second century before Christ. This translation of 46 books, called the Septuagint, had wide use in the Roman world because most Jews lived far from Palestine in Greek cities. Many of these Jews spoke only Greek.

The early Christian Church was born into this world. The Church, with its bilingual Jews and more and more Greek-speaking Gentiles, used the books of the Septuagint as its Bible. Remember the early Christians were just writing the documents what would become the New Testament.

After the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, with increasing persecution from the Romans and competition from the fledgling Christian Church, the Jewish leaders came together and declared its official canon of Scripture, eliminating seven books from the Septuagint.

The books removed were Tobit, Judith, 1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees, Wisdom (of Solomon), Sirach, and Baruch. Parts of existing books were also removed including Psalm 151 (from Psalms), parts of the Book of Esther, Susanna (from Daniel as chapter 13), and Bel and the Dragon (from Daniel as chapter 14).

The Christian Church filled with the Holy Spirit did not follow suit but kept all the books in the Septuagint. 46 + 27 = 73 Books total.

1500 years later, Protestants decided to keep the Catholic New Testament but change its Old Testament from the Catholic canon to the Jewish canon.

The books that were removed supported such things as

    • Prayers for the dead (Tobit 12:12; 2 Maccabees 12:39-45)

    • Purgatory (Wisdom 3:1-7)

    • Intercession of saints in heaven (2 Maccabees 15:14)

    • Intercession of angels (Tobit 12:12-15)

The books they dropped are sometimes called the Apocrypha.

The answer is that we did not. I assume you are referring to the seven extra books in the catholic old testament canon. In the time of Jesus there was not a set number of books that the Jews regarded as inspired, depending on where in the world the Jews would be the number of books would vary a bit. The number of books that we find in the Catholic bible is called the number found in the septuagint version of the Hebrew scriptures. It is a greek tanslation of the Hebrew bible set down by Jewish scholars in the 3 century BC, in Alexandria.

The books that we find in the protestant bibles are found in Jewish scripture after Christs death and resurrection, but we can find the septuagint books used by the apostles and by the early Christians alike.

A better question is why did the protestant reformers find it necessary to take books out the bible that had been there since before the birth of Christ?

So you've seen the original writings have you? You've been in the Vatican Archives huh? You have scrolls from the 1st Century? From BEFORE? Do you?

You don't have the fist clue what you're talking about. The Catholic Church brought the Bible to mankind to spread the Gospel message. That message is now everywhere. Quit looking for reasons not to live like a Christian, quit looking for reasons and get a shred of faith.

Why do we use the word "servant" instead of "slave" as the original Jewish writings said when Jesus told men to slavishly devote their lives to obedience to God? It sounded better? It left the door open to still maintain slavery? Who knows. It doesn't change the Gospel message. Semantics and syntax are details for experts, not for you and I. You will never change Christianity, so you can either choose to follow or to spread division. Obey or dissent. No one is oppressing you, so just take a stand. Hot or cold. Not lukewarm.

    It's up to you scooter.

I don´t know if the Catholic Church is responsible for doing what you say in your question. It may have been a problem with translation from Hebrew to Greek, Latin or whatever other languages it was translated into. Now, for the protestants here, There are over 200 different denominations each with their bible interpretations, belief systems etc. The Catholic Church, the Russian and Greek Orthodox churches have a valid priesthood dating back two thousand years. Their theology is basically the same. Two differences, the later two do not recognize the Pope, and they pray in Russian or Greek. They are schismatic churches.

Source(s): There are languages that cannot translate accurately from Hebrew, Latin or Greek.

The Bible says, ‘Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.'

The Catholic Church says: ‘No. By my divine power I abolish the Sabbath day and command you to keep holy the first day of the week.’ And lo! The entire civilized world bows down in a reverent obedience to the command of the holy Catholic Church.

Simply put, they wanted the Bible to fit in with their dogma.

For example, the doctrine of purgatory is found nowhere else in the Bible except in the books they added.

I was raised a Catholic. While I do not hate them and I am not a Catholic-basher, I know what they believe. Both of my parents are still devout Catholics.

I am not. I am of the opinion that there is serious, soul-damning error in that religion.

No offense intended to anyone reading this, but what I want to know is, after reading the history of the abuses of this religion why anyone would want to remain in it?

I am currently reading a book by a Catholic historian about Pope Pius XII. It is entitled "Hitler's Pope" by John Cornwell. The author's intention was to exonerate this pope for the bad reputation the church gained during WWII of keeping silent about the Final Solution (extermination of Jews).

During his research he realized that the information he uncovered actually brought more condemnation on Pius XII.

Historically, the Catholic church hated the Jews and believed that any persecution they received was deserved.

So why wouldn't they reject anything Jewish?

    They didn't.

    _______

Alzo: NONE of that has anything to do with changing the Old Testament scriptures.

    ______

Likewise, Gyrine. None of that has anything to do with changing the scriptures.

To you both, while the Catholic church PRACTICES some non-scriptural things, they did not re-write the Bible.

Satan is the current god of this evil world and his throne is located in the Vatican.
