IDE HDD in a SATA CPU?

Im currently building a new computer... finally. so anyways ive got all my parts that i want/need.

i have a 1.5 TB WD caviar green HDD.. SATA interface. on my old desktop i have a VERY old (about 8 years) WD IDE 80 GB HDD. This 80 GB can hold both Ubuntu and Windows 7. I want to use both these HDDs in my new computer build, and have the 80 GB hold both my OS, and my 1.5 TB hold all my games, media, and whatnot. Im also thinking about popping in the computer diagnostics and benchmark programs onto the 80 GB since it can hold it. My MOBO has a PATA/IDE slot and about 7 SATA slots.

1. Is this possible to run an IDE and a SATA HDD in one CPU?

2. How would i configure the Master/Slave settings?

obviously the 80 GB would be my master since its going to hold the OS, but how do i set the master/salve when the sata drives have no settings for them?

btw this is my first build and this is truly the only issue i havent been able to figure out.

also, any tips on actually building?

Rosewill CHALLENGER case

ASUS M4A79XTD EVO MOBO

AMD Phenom II X4 965

Sapphire HD 5770

WD Caviar Green 1.5 TB

G Skill ripjaws 4 GB (2 X 2GB)

Update:

just thinking, would i be better to partition an 80GB segment of the SATA, then put the OS in that partition, and use the 80GB HDD just as space?

Runnind IDE and SATA in a computer is possible.

The only concern I have is that you're going to use IDE as primary drive and load OS in it.

IDE is an older interface and much slower data rate that SATA interface. Booting from IDE means your OS will boot slower, data r/w will be slower as compared to SATA. I recommend using SATA as primary hard disk and make IDE as secondary.

your OS is always reading/writing primary hdd but secondary, is only used to retrieve the data when you want to.

You can change boot priority from BIOS settings.

Master/slave settings are only applicable to the IDE interface.

When a computer boots it checks the drives for a bootable "active" partition.

You can only have one "active" partition on a computer.

So yes, you can use the IDE and SATA drives together.

If you have any problems or delays in the booting, you can always go in the BIOS setup and change the boot order of which drives the computer looks at first.

it somewhat is amazingly straightforward, what does the cable working to the HD look as though? Is it an excellent grayish ribbon cable, coming off a 4o pin IDE conncector on the mummy board, or a narrow one, that has basically 7 or 9 pins. If its the huge cable, then it somewhat is IDE, if it somewhat is the narrow cable with the small adapters, then it somewhat is SATA.
