How do artists make money off of mixtapes?
We are trying to figure out why artists make mixtapes versus albums. Is it because of all of the album "red tape"?

Yeah it's easier and faster to put out. You don't have to worry about stuff like promotion shows or worry about not having a balanced tracklist and album setup, you don't have to worry about your label whining about how there isn't a catchy club banger with good featured artists on it and you don't have to worry about copyrights.
Also If it's a big artist they may be doing it for their fans.
If it's a lesser-known artist, they are wanting to get there name out and like I said it's faster. Plus, people are more likely to download a free mixtape to check out an artist instead of buying an album (I know you can download albums free but some people don't like to)
With there name out there, they will make more money doing concerts and local shows, so sometimes it makes up for it and more.

Well If the mixtapes give you the right fame and you have a good fan base then you should see moderate money from features and shows.

it gets as much attention as albums plus it costs less cuz the songs are unmastered
