I need a program to edit out certain sections of a .mpg movie file?

I have a movie which I burned from a dvd, and my burning program turned it into a .mpg file to preserve the best quality, apparently. My purpose for doing this is because there are some family members that I would like to edit out some scenes for, so that they can watch it. There's only about 3 different scenes at various points in the movie. I need a program that will let me edit this file, cut out specific sections and basically have it not be noticeable that I cut anything from it. Suggestions?

Note: All spam and copy-and-paste answers will be reported - don't waste your time. I need some kind of structured sentence if you post a link, so that I can know that you're not spamming and not just advertising a totally unrelated program that does not even do what I am looking for. Thanks.

Update:

I also forgot to add that I intend to burn this finished file to a DVD, so that they won't be watching the original disc and I won't need that anymore.

So I'm assuming you need a software to do this. Now I can't tell you any FREE software that will allow you to edit .mpg files, but I use Adobe After Effects. It is however kinda expensive and I don't recommend you to buy it unless you plan to edit ALOT. I also use .mpg files since my camera films in that format so if it's just this ONE time you need a movie edited, go ahead and download a free 30 day trial at the adobe website: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?produ...

But note that this only works with 64-bit computers, and you should learn the program a bit before you use it though as it is confusing. The nice thing about this program is it preserves the quality which I think you want and let's you render the FINAL movie to any format YOU want such as .mov, .wmv, .mpg4, etc. Lots of other formats. If you have any further questions, go ahead and email me at: matthew0park0@yahoo.com

Source(s): I use Adobe After Effects CS4 to edit, FX, Sound Design.
