How much should I charge for a homemade tote bag?

I made my sister a tote bag for school, and now all her friends wants me to make some for them. They're going to provide the fabric, so I just don't know how much I should charge. I always feel bad about charging people.

I'd be letting them "design" it as in tell me how they want it to look. It has pockets inside for pencils, cell phone, etc.

You better tell them up front how much.

Standard tote with pockets - $10.00 + notions.

Special orders - $15 and up depending on how much work is involved.

There is more to making a tote than just the fabric. You have to add in the cost for interfacing, thread and any other notions you need to add (like buttons, zippers, Velcro.

What they're paying you for is your time, and for a beginning seamstress, I'd figure on about $15 per hour. If you don't charge, people will expect you to make the bags for free and all of a sudden lots of people will want them and you'll have no time. So charge! If they love the bag, they'll be happy to pay.

    Good luck!
