My system32 folder opens randomly. Win7?

I recently purchased a brand new laptop from the store, came with Windows 7 Home Premium. I love the laptop. Runs nicely. I just run into a problem occasionally. When I try to do certain things, it will a lot of times open my system32 folder. Ex. I'll pull up the start menu and scroll over Google Chrome, then the arrow beside it. It shows me a list of my most visited websites. Very useful, but I can't use it because when I click it it opens system 32. This happens for other things to. I can't name them, but I do remember it happening for a few things.

Is there anyway to fix it? What am I looking at a virus or something? Just an error in the OS? All answer would be great. If you don't want to type it out, you can link me to a useful website, a reliable one tho.

Thanks in advanced.

Also I'm running an Acer Aspire Brand new.

sounds like a redirect virus, usually harmless just annoying. get yourself malwarebytes (google it). works great. could also be a bad shortcut, delete the shotrcut and run google chrome elseware.

It is a setting in the registry. Go to the start button, click and select Run Type in: regedit The Registry window should appear You may have to scroll a little to find the keys listed below. Each time you click on one of the + signs, a subdirectory should open Click the + in front of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Click the + in front of Software Click the + in front of Microsoft Click the + in front of Windows Click the + in front of CurrentVersion Click on the word RUN You will see several values on the right hand side of the registry window. Each is a file or folder that Windows opens when it loads. One of those should have the name "system32" If you right-click on that name, you can select delete from the menu that appears, and the annoying system32 window will not longer open HOWEVER, if you delete the wrong line, it will prevent something else you probably do want from opening. So before you delete the key, click on the File menu and select "Export". This will make a copy of eveything under "Run". Save it where you will be able to find it if you need it. Then delete the system32 line. If this causes problems, return to the "Run" folder in the registry windows and do a File/Import to put the line back. Good luck

It sounds like you have a virus or a bug which is either getting the shortcut links wrong or is purposely changing them. You should do a virus scan with Spybot (free) or if it only happens with Chrome, just update to a newer version. Or just permanently upgrade to Firefox ;D .

If this doesn't work you could look for a service pack or try looking for updates through Windows 7's 'Windows Update" in control panel.
