Pain relief for son to be circumcised?
I dont know if anyone can help my 4 1/2 son is due to be circumcised next week and I want to be prepared (!) as much as possible ~ does anyone know of a good pain relief which I can give him or apply which may help things heal and/or lessen the pain.
I would like to say he is having this done purly for medical reasons only.
Many thanks - Pamela
We are in England not America so its a bit different here I guess ~ he is 4 1/2 years and needs this op as his urine is having problems and has had too many infections due to the skin not retracting so after 4 hospital consulations they have decided to do the op while he is young ~ but I will consult my doctor on Monday to prepare thanks for that advice.

Dear Pamela
Your son needs circumcision by surgeon and it may waste to use any medication to avoid surgery. In this case the narrowness of urine passage, dribbling of urine, pain while passing urination, infection at the end of urine outlet, swelling, etc are associate problems or symptoms. Better to plan for surgery earlier. But you need not worry it is very very simple surgery and very common in many children. Meanwhile use the note Homeopathic medicines for avoiding much pain or infection. ok. HYPERICUM 30C PILLS - daily morning five pills and apply CALENDULA MOTHER TINCTURE apply externally by mixing with some little water preferably 1 : 1 ratio. These medicines are available in UK and you can search for the stores in the net. ok. For any post surgical management like to heal early and to avoid any infection etc consult a good homeopathic physician which certainly gives better results.

Wait...for medical reasons? What reasons? Please elaborate.
If he has a tight foreskin, that is NOT a reason for circumcision. It is 100% normal for a boy of his age to have a tight foreskin. In fact, sometimes a person's foreskin will not retract until they reach puberty.
If he is getting infections, could it be because his foreskin has been forcibly retracted? Forcing the foreskin back can cause pain, inflammation, infections, and even adhesions.
Again, please elaborate. Circumcision of unconsenting minors is wrong and it should only be done if you're absolutely positive that it's the only choice. I suggest getting a second opinion. Most urologists are very anti-circ because they're experts at male anatomy and they known that foreskin problems can be cured with things like antibiotics (for a male of any age) and steroid cream (for adults who have phimosis, which is a tight foreskin). Like I said phimosis-like symptoms are normal and beneficial at his age. The foreskin is purposefully tight to protect the urinary tract.
American society has been duped to think that a foreskin is a ticking time bomb for infection, but it's NOT. With a daily shower and the use of gentle soap (not antibacterial soap, and with just gentle cleaning- not aggressive cleaning), there will never be any problems. The main reason why American boys have problems with their foreskins is because their parents are not educated on the proper way to care for an intact penis. The golden rule is to "leave it alone." Never retract the foreskin. The first person to retract the foreskin should always be the boy himself. There is never a true medical reason for circumcision. Don't toss 20,000 nerve endings into the trash unless you 100% HAVE to.
EDIT: His skin is NOT supposed to retract. By forcibly retracting the foreskin you probably caused inflammation and swelling and this is what probably caused the urinary problems. (I'm sorry if I sound rude, I just hate to see a child go through something so unncessary). But if you're totally sure it's necessary go for it I guess....
Homeopathy dude, you are a freak.

Poor kid. = I did not know we still have doctors so ignorant here in England.
There is no medical reason for this.
The foreskin of a baby boy is attached at birth to the glans by the Epithelium
exactly like finger-nail to finger. It requires NO cleaning "underneath".
The foreskin should NEVER be retracted until puberty by boy himself when
epithelium disolves. Forcible retraction at age 4 will rip the glans raw
It is excruciatingly painful. No wonder the poor kid is having urine infections.
This doctor should be STRUCK OFF.
Report him to PALS/ NHS and GMC.
Ask for another doctor and insist on 2nd opinion.
this is quite unethical and disgraceful.
M.
BTW if you pull foreskin forward and LEAVE IT ALONE - it may heal by itself
I would certainly try this first, before subjecting him to useless unethical
operation. Risk of skin bridge but that can be left to teens.
At age 4 good chance it will heal.

The foreskin rarely retracts on a 4 year old boy! The foreskin is not meant to pull back at that age. If he is having infections, it's probably from you (or a doctor) trying to tug back his foreskin. If you just leave his foreskin alone he'll be fine. So I suggest you try that before opting for unnecessary surgery. Good luck!

this is ridiculous your being given bad advice it is not normal for a 4 year olds foreskin to be retractable and indeed in many case the foreskin remains forward and non-retractable until teens .besides you need to look elsewhere for help . preputioplasty is the operation your son requires if indeed his foreskin being tight is the problem, this procedure involves minor slits being made in the skin allowing expansion and is successful in 90 to 95 % of patients but you have to ask for it as they do not always suggest it which is a pity , preputioplasty involves little trauma fast healing and no loss of tissue and in comparison with the daunting surgical disaster which will be caused to your 4 year old with weeks of awful discomfort afterward preputioplasty will be a walk in the park so to speak. please make an approach to your medical providers about this alternative and if they wont play ball go to another g.p. or clinic in your neighboring area or even go private if you can , feel free to email me and i will do what i can to help i too had this problem but was cured by stretching.

Well, it depends on whether your son is 4 1/2 weeks or 4 1/2 years. In the pediatric clinic where I work, we only do circs up to 2 weeks of age. We would encourage parents to give 0.25ml of Tylenol or Motrin just before the circumcision. If he is 4yrs old then that would be up to your surgeon. At this age, they have to go to the operating room and be completely put under and then receive stitches after wards. I would call your doctor ahead of time either way to see what their suggestion is as far as pain relief. They are given a local anesthetic before the circ if he is under a month and sometimes that helps for after wards as well. (not for an extended amt. of time of course). Best thing is to be sure and listen to the aftercare instructions so that you tend to the site properly after and ensure that no infection set in. Hope this helps. Kay
