    Are his nails real long? They need to be kept short. If that be the case your dog has started 'padding' falling back on the big pad of the foot instead of being up on his toes. This will cause pain. Check nails once a month.

    Being board will cause this. The dog needs more exercise & stimulation.

    Border Collies are the smartest of all breeds & the Dal is about the dumbest of all dogs.

    You need to start training the dog. Here is a video I would like you to see. & if this woman can train her BC you can train your's too

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuuSyIAnlhA&feature...

    Watch how close this dog pays attention & how he watches her.

    Look up;

    obedience training, you will get many sites & you can chose the method you like best. Most have step by step instructions.

    this is a question without a simple answer. Anytime there is a "behavior" involved, it is most important to first rule out an underlying medical reason for the behavior. If all medical concerns are ruled out, then the problem can be approached as a behavioral one, and behavior modification techniques can be employed.

    my moms beagle did this for years and he always said oh shes just bored, I asked her many times to go to the vet but the refused, years later she then began chewing her paws raw, the fur had came off and the skin was red, she finally took her to the vet and she had allergys deemed to be from grass pollen. the vet recommended filling the bathtub with luke warm water just enough to cover her feet and pour in half cup epsom salt, let her stand in it for 10-15 mins and repeat daily. this alone has worked miracles on her. It is not "cured" but helps and soothes alot to where she does not chew on them anymore.

    Your dog could be either cleaning itself or like my dog it could be biting its nails,if you do not take it to get its claws trimmed at a salon (which i think is mean to the dog.) then they could do it themselves!

    Its okay,and normal!
