Canon 350D (Digital Rebel XT) DSLR. What Do You Think?
I currently have a Canon powershot S70 but would like to try and move up to a DSLR.
I'm on a tight budget so thought looking at 2nd hand could be worthwhile.
My local camera shop has a Canon 350D for sale at £200. Reasonable condition, 12 month warranty. Comes with all the bits in the box etc.
I've heard good things about the Digital Rebel series; reviews were good when it came out in 2006.
What do you think? Would the 350D be a good buy for a first DSLR?

It's a DSLR, it's key thing is that it gives you a big sensor with the capability of full manual! The 350D doesn't the bells and whisles such as live view or video but that shouldn't concern a photographer. You should be aware of what lens (if any) you will get with the camera, this is almost as important as the camera as this determines what and how you shoot, and do remember to account for the cost of buying a lens should it not come with one.
The Rebel cameras are entry-level SLRs and it's cheapness does show compared to a prosumer product, but it's still far tougher than your compact camera.
There's definitely nothing wrong with buying a second hand body, in fact it's a really smart move. And the Canon 350D is a perfectly capable camera.

That is a good price for a 350D with a 12 month warranty provided it has a lens and is not just the body.
\it is a great entry level camera that will have all the features you need to start taking real photographs.

If you think that you will eventually be moving up to a camera in the semi-pro range, then the cheapest thing that allows you shoot in full manual mode is what you want...and that XT is a great idea. Many people spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on their first entry level DSLR camera, and then a couple years later spend hundreds and hundreds to upgrade. If you are really interested in photography, then you first DSLR camera should be nothing more than a tool to help you learn the relationship between ISO, shutter speed, and aperture...and ANY DSLR will work for that!

Its more than just shutter speed. The XT is made for consumer camera users, you will basically get all of the "dummy" modes such as Landscape, Nightime, portrait, AUTO Mode etc. When you go with the 20D, 5D etc etc you are buying a more professional grade camera. A much better body, the XT being plastic and the 20D being metal. Other things to look for is ISO range, the list can go on but I would get the 20D if you plan to do this more as a profession.

the 350d is a great little camera i had one. the price is ok but the warranty is pointless. look for a 400d without the warranty for the same money. ebay is great for things like this
