Few questions about teeth?

1. I've looked up baking soda & how it can be used to whiten teeth, but I'm still not 100% sure. Does it really work? But I did read about how it can gradually, with excessive use, damage your teeth. So if anyone could just give me the low-down on it.

2. Other than baking powder, are there any other 'home remedies' for white teeth?

3. Some enamel on my teeth worn away... like, the top edges of them are almost... grey, if that makes any sense? Just the very top. I've seen it on adverts before about 'acidic erosion' etc. So is there anyway to build up the enamel or make it stronger (& gums)?

4. The 2 teeth either side of my front teeth are growing in behind (I'm 14) the baby teeth, kind of on the roof of my mouth, but not that far back. & they're abnormal in size... too small. I'm getting braces sometime, but you know how orthodontists can be with taking their time to reply... & it's been a constant worry for me for years. They basically have to bring the 2 teeth forward. But I've also worried as to how they'll manage, because the one on the left is really quite small, so I can't see the train-track style brace fitting on it... so yes. What type of braces do you reckon I'll get? How long will it take?

5. The dentist said that once they've been moved, they'll have to build the 2 teeth up because they're small. She said to me to 'not worry, it's very simple & easy, nothing to worry about'. What will they use to make the teeth bigger? How will they do it? Is it efficient?

Any answers are greatly appreciated... thank you.

Hiya Hope I can help answer your questions. Baking soda toothpastes etc work only by scrubbing away any surface staining your teeth may have built up from such things as smoking, drinking tea or coffee or just general food dyes within your diet. It will not make your teeth any whiter than their original colour but as you so rightly said it will eventually damage your teeth because it is simply scrubbing the surface away. If you are going to use this then it is advisable to use only occasionally along side a normal toothpaste. No home remedy is going to really whiten your teeth other than bleach and if you wanted to go down that path please go to a dentist rather than a home kit which cost money but aren't as strong or rather than going to a beautician who use different chemicals and are not dentally trained to cope with any problems caused from the bleach! With regards to strengthening the enamel on your teeth, use a good mouthwash daily that has fluoride within its ingredients. Nothing will rebuild enamel.

With regards to the small teeth either side of your front teeth. It isn't unusual for these teeth to be smaller however the orthodontist wont normally do anything until your baby teeth have either fallen out or if taking too long then taken out by your dentist. Don't worry about the 'train track' fittings, they have sizes for all so they will have one that fits or may decide on an alternative type of brace fitting. Once they have been moved into place you and your dentist may decide to build up the teeth to a more fitting size. This can be done 2 ways 1) using composite (tooth coloured) filling material which can be bonded onto the tooth, 2) making a porcelain or ceramic crown. This is like a false tooth but it fits over the top of your small tooth kind of like a bucket fits over the top of a sand castle ha. Both of these are not permanent, the same as all dentistry, and they may fall off from time to time or replaced but both are very simple to do and really nothing to worry about.

Hope all this helps and please feel free to message again if you need further help.

    1. Baking Soda does whiten teeth, but not dramatically. Baking soda gives your teeth a whiter appearance by removing tough stains. Baking soda works to actively remove dulling plaque and deep stains that are embedded deep in tooth surface crevices by dissolving into these areas.

    2. You can use salt water and rinse with that. It works like Baking Soda and its recommended by some dentists.

    3. Heard of Sensodyne? There one called "sensodyne pronamel" which helps build back some of the enamel.

    4. You can be fitted with a fixed or removable palatal expander. It widens your top jaw slowly making room to fit the teeth together. For more info on this click the link in my source.

    5. They can use veneers which are like caps for teeth or a porcelin filling. The results can be very efficiant for healthy teeth! You'll have a matching set of teeth.

    good luck.

crest 3d whitening strips work great! they're enamel safe and you only wear then 5 minutes a day. also whitening booster(this clear stuff you put over your toothpaste) is only $5 at the grocery store and it works great, it just might take a bit to work. u need to use it continuously.
