About A Palm Sized Bug Flies Being Ripped In Half?

My mom said she saw my dog with something in her mouth.. she wouldn't let go of it so we couldn't really tell what it was.. she ripped it in half and the body flew in 2 different directions. My mom said it may have looked like a locust, but as far as I know the advarge locust around here are small. Any idea of what it could be or any other information?? Haven't seen anything like this before. It was about the size of her hand.

Update:

Grasshopper? Can they be the size of an adult human hand?

Update 2:

oh and also to add my mom said it looked kinda "fat" for a bug

    A grasshopper.

Source(s): In the future, you never pull anything out of a dog's mouth. That just rips it and pulls out teeth. You pry the dog's mouth open.

Ya. It could have been a grasshopper or a horse fly.
