What is the exact meaning of Jihad?
I understand that the word is used for various scenarios-usually to justify what has been considered an insult to Islam. But what actually is the EXACT translation of the word-if it is actually possible to EXACTLY translate it because I know that some words or descriptions do not translate and you have to accept an approximation.
OK it seems it means struggle in one form or another. Thank you for your prompt answers-I can't really select one over another-but thank you all anyway.

Oh I have just read the reference given by Sarahh and I have to give it to her. I have found lots of things I did not know and it really fully explains the meaning of Jihad. Thank you for your replies.

Dear.Jihad is an Arabic word that literately means to strive and to struggle.We perform Jihad in the way of Allah by following his commandments and going against our will to walk in Allah's way.Several ways of Jihad are praying,fasting,honesty,truth and all good deeds etc.

According to the OED: Jihad: (among Muslims) A war or struggle against unbelievers also
(greater) jihad: The spiritual struggle within oneself against sin.
From: the Arabic meaning (literally): effort, expressing, in muslim thought, struggle on behalf of God and Islam.

As far as I know it literally means "struggle".
Various schools of Islamic thought interpret that in different ways with mainstream ones seeing it as a spiritual struggle while the zealots see it as a literal, militaristic struggle.

Struggle.
Struggle against anything really. Against sin, an enemy, hunger, ignorance etc. Lately it has been used by madmen to justify insanities but it simply means to struggle.

jihad means to fight against something ..and this is the general meaning .
jihad in islam mean to fight against the enemies who are trying to attack islam and Islamic countries .
it's not about killing innocent people ..and it's not the same as terrorisim
for example what iraqis do with the u.s army in iraq is called jihad because they are fighting for there country and for there independence
but what happened in WTC that is called terrorisim ..

The exact meaning is: Crazy azz middle easterns wanting to act a dang fool over something that should other wise make you act better not worse, and this goes for the word, *****, parent, government, and White...thank you for asking.
