I asked this question once already and just got a lot of hateful, ignorant answers. so i am trying again. please be helpful because faith is a huge part of my life and i want to be accepted somewhere.
Again, i am sixteen and was raised christian but have been looking into islam since i was fourteen when a neighborhood friend gave me the Qu'ran as a gift. It has influenced my life so much already but i have a lot of questions because what i'm reading and what i see on TV aren't matching up?
answer as many as you can!
-Are darker skinne people looked down upon?
-Do converts get less respect than people born into the religion?
-HOW do i convert? can i talk to someone or take classes (kind of like sunday school that christians have?)
-can i still attend religious family celebrations as long as i dont drink or pray to jesus?
- Do i have to wear full hijab or burqa, just cover my head, or just dress conservatively and modestly? what do most muslim women do?
-can i still be a singer?
-Is dance allowed? (not trashy dancing...like jazz/ballet)
-can i keep my piiercings? (ears/nose?)
-Where can i talk to a supportive group of people about converting?
-Does the qu'ran really support honor killings and stonings? i thought it was a peaceful religion?
-Will i be accepted being of mixed races? i know in the bible it says its a sin to be of mixed races :(
-Feel free to add anything else you think i should know.
Please help, i have no one to go to about these things! :[ and i'm really trying to be a wholesome, religious person in my life. My life is nothing without faith.
These are sooo helpful thankyou so much everyone and God bless you.

"My life is nothing without faith" you understood it very perfect.
Salamo Alykom, Welcome studding and love Islam, we love you too in Allah track.
In Islam the Major points all Muslims will say one reply, but for some minor points it may depends on interpretation, so it may differ.
Allah as us to be good as best as we can. So don't wary in Islam nothing is more than our ability.
-Are darker skinne people looked down upon?
Absolutely No, all are equals.
-Do converts get less respect than people born into the religion?
Absolutely No, contrary more respect, that he read, suffer to find the truth.
-HOW do i convert? can i talk to someone or take classes (kind of like sunday school that christians have?)
Say Shihado loudly after careful complete washing with only clean water (Gosl).
-can i still attend religious family celebrations as long as i dont drink or pray to jesus?
If it may contains ani-Islam teaches shout be No. Generally is better to avoid, some may say no in all cases (it may need farther investigation).
- Do i have to wear full hijab or burqa, just cover my head, or just dress conservatively and modestly? what do most muslim women do?
For foreigners, yes. Which type? generally it should be well respected type, but every place may have their culture.
-can i still be a singer?
Generally not accepted.
But it may depends: with music? there are men or not? the word of sing? for marriage with women? ..etc.. (it may need farther investigation)
-Is dance allowed? (not trashy dancing...like jazz/ballet)
see above reply.
-can i keep my piiercings? (ears/nose?)
I think no problem. (It may need farther investigation)
-Where can i talk to a supportive group of people about converting?
Any good societies, or Mosque (depends on where are you?)
-Does the qu'ran really support honor killings and stonings? i thought it was a peaceful religion?
Media made a bad picture for Islam.
About stoning, if Allah ask us to do something, sure that is correct, because he know better than us. You can see when this to be done, and why?
Also Islam peaceful in peace, strong beside fair in defence enemy.
-Will i be accepted being of mixed races? i know in the bible it says its a sin to be of mixed races
In Islam we are all brothers.

-Are darker skinne people looked down upon? - No the Qur'an teaches us that to God, we're all equal
-Do converts get less respect than people born into the religion? No, when someone converts, they're cleared of ALL past sins :)
-HOW do i convert? can i talk to someone or take classes (kind of like sunday school that christians have?) All you have to say is the Shahadah (decalration) 'I declare that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad (pbuh) is his messenger)
-can i still attend religious family celebrations as long as i dont drink or pray to jesus? Best to avoid, but if you can't then yes
- Do i have to wear full hijab or burqa, just cover my head, or just dress conservatively and modestly? what do most muslim women do? Hijab and dressing modestly is compulsary, but you don't have to wear Burka if you don't want to. There are hadith where A'ishah does cover her face and doesn't
-can i still be a singer? No singing is prohibited
-Is dance allowed? (not trashy dancing...like jazz/ballet) I don't think so
-can i keep my piiercings? (ears/nose?) Yep
-Where can i talk to a supportive group of people about converting? Any Islamic Centre
-Does the qu'ran really support honor killings and stonings? i thought it was a peaceful religion? Stoning is but its sort of used a a deterrent so people don't commit crimes like adultery (the Bible also allows stoning btw). Honour killings are forbidden
-Will i be accepted being of mixed races? i know in the bible it says its a sin to be of mixed races :( YES! We're all equal!

Well in my opinion you are too young. If you are really determined to convert, then what if you convert when your older? I don't know if your mom will accept that because she's a Christian right? I mean thats the logical response. Thats all I'm gonna tell you because I can't really answer that question. And I guess the answer is the ever so mysterious saying "It's all up to you". Though it sounds so common that its ridicilous, it is ironicly the answer. If you really want to do it then go for it. Go where your heart really tells you. You are the driver seat of your life. I experience a situation like this before but my loyalty for Christianity got the best of me so I learned to ignore the 'temptations'.

1) Not at all. We're all followers of God, equal to each other.
2) No, I have met some converts who are more attached to Allah and the Quran than people born Muslims. We just say 'Alhamdulillah - Thanks be to God" when someone tells us he converted to Islam :)
3) Go to a Mosque and say the Shahada in front of people. (In Arabic).
"There is no deity but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God"
4) Join classes to learn more, if you can manage it.
5) If you're not comfortable wearing the Hijab (Which is encouraged), make sure you dress modest. No tight stuff, cover your breast area and perhaps wear a long top to cover your bottom.
6) You can keep your piercings!
7) Islam never encouraged or supported honor killings and stoning. Some governments support that and that's it. The Quran does not tell people "To commit suicide in the name of God".
Any person kills himself does not enter Heaven.
8) Yes! We're taught that we are all equal - Our race has nothing to do with us being just human beings.
There are sites you can read the Quran in English.
Good luck in every thing you're trying to do. God forgives all of your past sins if you convert to Islam.

1) NO. Allah (GOD) doesn't hold you accountable for something you didn't have control over. If you are white, black, brown or any other colour on the rainbow, It doesn't matter. What matter is your piety and righteousness. You Imaan, your faith. Im Indian and most people throw me wierd look and ask me "Are you Muslim or Indian" I say BOTH :)
2) I respect converts alot. It teaches me that if Allah wants to guide you, He will and He is All-Powerful. Many people born as Muslims are Muslims because a their ancestors were. They follow Islam as if it were a culture, a mere tradition. But converts have to go seeking for the truth, and therefore they appreciate it more. You are special. God chose you for Islam. He is giving you a shot at Paradise and will forgive all your past sins.
3) Go to the nearest Masjid (Mosque) and talk to the Imaan (sort of like the preist?) There are many Islamic courses out there. The best of the best would be the Al Maghrib Institute. The teach courses in Canada, Ameria, UK and Austraila. Google it and find out the next when the next course is in your city.
4) YES. In fact you have to . Your family has rights over you. They are blood ties that God choose to make, You can't break them. I'd see this as an oppurtunity to tell your family about Islam. If your family converts, you get the same reward as them, without their reward being reduced. For ex: if you are going over for Christmas, don't sing carols.
5) Hijab is not just clothing, you have to understand that. Hijab should be worn as a character. They're should be Haya'h (modesty) in your actions, words and your clothing as well. I wear a head scarf and long shirts. You don't have to wear an Burqa but it's your choice. Anything that will don't attract attention. This can include, noisy high-heels, strong perfume, too much make up, anything that make people notice you TOO MUCH.
6) NO, sorry you can't be a singer. Singing is not Haram as long as the lyrics are 'good' and modest and they're isnt heavy background music (Scholars have different opinions thou). They're nasheed that will sustitute for your music. Search Zain Bhika on Youtube, HES AMAZING! If you have a good voice, try using it in the way of Allah by reading the Qur'an with proper Tajweed. But the beauty of your voice is only for your husband, no other males.
7) NO, again anything that shows off your grace and beauty is not to be seen by male except your husband.
8) YES, you can have them. Nose and ears are fine, Eyebrow, tounge etc is considered vulgar and won't fit in with your Hijabi, modest character.
9) The Masjid. They most probably will tell you about Islam and make you take the Testimony of Faith (the Shahadah : La ilaha ilallah muhammadur rasool allah) at some gathering where people will witness you saying it.
10) Wala hu alam, Allah know best. I don't know enough, but ask the Imaam about it at the mosque. He is more knowlegdeable. Islam is peaceful. Islam comes from the root word 'Salam' which means peace. Don't let the media tell you how to judge people.
You are truly lucky. God chose you. May He reward you for the efforts you are making. It'll make sense later. Do consider the Al Maghrib courses. They're excellent and taught by qualified scholars. They are about 165$ but you can email them for a scholarship which is about 65$.

1. You have already decided what to do so sound, truthful, warnings will sound like your 'hateful, ignorant answers'.
There are millions of muslims in the world another lost soul is not going to be a loss to anyone. Lets hope you are brave and honest enough to judge by yourself once you have entered a group which warns it's followers of the death penalty for leaving. Let's hope that your future muslim husband is not a lecherous swine and that you dont have to read these words again to yourself as a warning you didn't pay heed to. Let's hope you read the koran and understand its ayats with reference to hadis. Finally let's hope you understand what the word 'brainwashing' means and implies.

-dark skinned people r not looked down upon in islam. its more or a culture thing if any
-converts often get more respect, but there r a few muslims who still believe they r the best and just ignore them
-often times a mosque will have classes u can go to and learn more about islam, and talk to other muslims about it as well. first hand knowledge is better than a book. when ur ready, u will repeat the shahada in front of an imam and witnesses and be a muslim!
-people r iffy about that. my family is christian, and i attend but refrain from drinking and eating pork, things like that. some will tell u its ok, some will say no..its up to u in the end
-hijab is mandatory, but u must feel ur ready and want to wear it. niqab and burqa and culture, not religion
-singer is kinda bad to some, depending on what ur singing i guess
-dancing in front of men, any men is haram unless they r ur father, brothers and husband
-ears can stay pierced, nothing else
-find a mosque ur comfortable with, they often have other converts u can talk too
-honor killings and such have nothing to do with islam, culture once again :(
-of course u will be accepted, lots of people r mixed now
hope this helps u!

-u can still attend religious family celebrations

- 1 decade ago
1. No. Race means nothing in Islam.
2. No. If anything, people respect and love them more.
3. You convert by saying the Shahada. Ashadu an la illaha ill Allah,wa ashadu ana Mohammedan rasulullah ; I declare that there is no God worthy of worship except Allah and that Mohamed is his messenger.
4. Honestly no. But that can be difficult for a converted muslim. You can still be a muslim if you do it,but better to avoid those gatherings. It's not good to go there because we do not like people to put equals with Allah and we should hate going to places where people do that.
5. Allah ordered women to wear hijab, that means a headscarf til over the chest. And that together with other modest clothing eg a long dress/skirt. This can be difficult for converted muslims and some may not wear this directly after converting. You can still convert without wearing hijab. It's not a pillar of Islam, but it IS important to try to wear it.
6/7. Music isn't allowed in Islam,so singing wouldn't be the best thing to do. However, again,it's not a pillar of Islam and some muslims choose to sing/dance and are still practising muslims. It's better to avoid it though.
8. Yes piercings are fine.
9. I don't know, that depends on where you're from. Try to speak to converted muslims online.
10. There's no such thing as honour killings in Islam as in fathers killing their daughters for intercourse outside marriage. It may happen, but it's not something religious. Stoning is the punishment for intercourse outside marriage if ther person is married/has been married before only. For someone who has never been married, the punishment is lashing.
11. Mixed race is not a problem is Islam.
You need to know that Islam is based on 5 pillars. I think you know them. The declaration of faith(the shahada) prayer ,charity, hajj and fasting of Ramadan.
If you believe in ONE God without equals/sons/daughters etc, then THAT'S IT , you're a muslim. You do need to learn about the other things, but these 5 things are the main things. Music, dancing, alcohol, eating pork, not wearing hijab etc won't make you a disbeliever and you can still be a muslim if you choose to do them anyway. But you would be disobeying Allah's rules which is obviously a very bad thing,so you do need to work on that.
