Can you use human shampoo on a horse's tail & mane?

I don't have any money to buy horse shampoo and no-one at the yard has any but I need to wash my pony's tail (and ideally mane). If I can, would it be better to use Melon scented shampoo which de-tangles (and it's kid's shampoo and conditioner so it'd be gentle) or Apple and Raspberry scented shampoo which makes hair soft and shiny?

Well my riding instructor uses human shampoo all the time. She says that the company's who make equine products, in this case shampoo, make it more expensive because, 1- they know that horse owners want it, 2- because its for horses which are expensive animals so there for they think that horse products should be expensive and 3- they want to make money and think they can charge more for sticking a picture of a horse on the label. As long as you use a shampoo with non- toxic things and safe chemicals then it should be fine. As for you asking which would be better I would say the melon scented one as it is more gentle but to be honest it dose not really matter as long as both are gentle and suitable for horses. Maybe, if both are safe for horses, you could use the kids one for the mane and the other for the tail, or the other way around. Then once you are done you can decide then which has the better end result. Then keep using the better one which will save you money. Instead of putting one type of shampoo on the mane and the other on the tail here is another option. Use on type now then the next time you wash the mane and tail use the other. You will also see the end result there too. In the horse world company's make products more expensive as they are for horses when human products would work just as well for half the price. I know that this is not with a horse but we use human shampoo on my dog all the time as the shampoo for dogs is also made expensive. The one that works best for her smells like apples. She licks it but has never came into any harm. I know lots of horse owners who use human shampoo all the time. Good luck and I hope your horse smells nice when your done. Try to go for one without a strong fruity scent though as this will attract bugs. Flys are always flying around my orange juice in the summer. Lots of humans have used main and tail horse shampoo. It got so popular in a certain country(cant remember the name but my riding instuctore told me) that even with people who hate horses used it. I have heard that they(main and tail shampoo company) are going to make one for humans. Not sure if they have because I heard this months ago.

    Mine? :)

No It makes it fuller as a horses would be for show time. Also use Sheen and Glow conditioner. We uses on wife and friends hair for 25 years, always shinny, full, luxuriant. Oh Wife had hair 9'3" long. hair grows at 1/30" a day. She grew it from 1970 to 1979 Vit and some extra ways to make it grow faster can be done but; not always for all.

Wow, I'm gunna try that, Roxy :D... Yes, using human shampoo on a horse is totally fine. I even had to wash my horse with dish soap before ha ha. My vet said it was fine so use whatever. If it doesn't hurt you and it probably wont hurt your horse.

I use human, dog, and horse shampoo on my mare. I wouldnt use human body wash, as that could be an irritant, but yeah.

    I'd do Melon

we always just used Johnson and Johnson no more tears baby shampoo. It's gentle and doesn't irritate and doesnt really have a smell.

It won't hurt her, but i don't like using human shampoo..especially the fruity kind, like you have. Fruity smells will attract bugs to her, just as you would attract bugs if you wore fruity shampoo or perfume outside.
