Where does the energy go?

When sound energy is canceled by noise reducing headphones, both the energy of the original sound wave and the energy going into creating the interfering wave seems to disappear. Where does that energy go?

The energy goes into a tiny infinitesmal heating of the air inside the headphones. And it really is tiny - on the same order of magnitude as how much the magnets in the headphones heat up. If the headphones are cancelling even 1 watt of acoustic energy, that's a *lot* of sound volume - and 1 watt of thermal energy is peanuts.
