If you are strumming the guitar and the strings are silent, you probably need to push down harder. When you first begin playing it can be uncomfortable, but it is well worth it. It will be that way for a little while, until you get calluses on the tips of your fingers. Try pushing down on only one string and play that string, and see what happens. If you get no sound, push harder. Then try it with two fingers and so on. You can build the calluses up that way too. I sure hope this helps, as a guitar player myself, I love to hear about people who want to learn.

You have to hold your fingers so that if the guitar was flat on the floor and you played a chord, your fingers should sit directly above the string your finger is on... like if you have a finger on the 1st fret of the 2nd string then your finger should not be resting on the 3rd string underneath..

I hope you get what I mean.
