How come new PC computers doesn't come packed with restore discs or genuine copy of Windows?

I very serious and very curious to why "Brand New" PC Laptops and Desktops doesn't come packed with restore/genuine copy of current Windows Software.

I remember few years ago, PC Laptops and desktops used to come packed with Genuine Restore Discs and Microsoft's Genuine Copy of Windows. But I don't seem to see any of them being packed together anymore.

Personally, I used to own a PC Toshiba Satellite Laptop that came with Windows Vista and I have not seen a single CD or DVD of restore/genuine Windows. I wonder this would be because of Microsoft's Customer service is going down ever since Apple's customer service has been satisfying to many customers.

Also, I now own a Apple's Late 2009 Macbook and I really love it especially the fact that they actually packed two discs which is a genuine copy of Snow Leopard and ilife 09 application just in case something wrong happens to my computer and I have to restore it.

Doesn't everyone who buys a PC Computer always have to receive a copy of OS and/or restore discs included in the new packaged boxes just incase their computers get infected with viruses or some other issues appear?

Also, I really don't understand why Microsoft's Latest Windows Software is so expensive to Apples Latest 10.6 Snow Leopard OS Which is Only $29. I feel that Microsoft's OS are way over priced. According to Microsoft's website, a Full Copy of Retail Windows 7 Ultimate is $319. I think this is very ridiculous price.

Does anybody have any ideas on why Microsoft's OS is so expensive/over priced?

In my opinion, I think the reason why most people download(pirate) Microsoft's OS software because of it's price specially in this economy, who would want to upgrade their computers for a huge amount of money. To me, I would just upgrade Mac's software on Mac because it is relatively cheap and affordable price.

I know many people say Apple products are over priced, but after using a Macbook, I think completely worth the price and the quality of the products. I specially like the Mac Latest OS Price because it's not too expensive than Microsoft's.

Please give me good and serious answers because I have always but just recently been wondering alot about why Microsoft's software is so over priced.

Thanks

The new PCs come with the restore files already installed on the hard drive on a hidden partition. You can create and burn physical restore discs if you want to.

And while you might think its Microsoft's problem, it is in fact the PC manufacturer's fault. Microsoft just licenses the company to install Windows on their PCs. Microsoft would have provided a single copy of the OS as they have been doing with System Intgrators(SI) for the last 15 yrs. SIs then install that copy of the OS and any other software and then clones the heck out of it.

    >Doesn't everyone who buys a PC Computer always have to receive a copy of OS and/or restore discs included in the new packaged boxes j

You are always advised to burn your own restoration DVD on the very first day your receive your computer. Your PC always comes with a special restoration program (e.g Acer computers always come with Acer eRecovery) that allows you to burn recovery DVD's that you can boot off to reinstall Windows.

Secondly, all desktops you buy off the retail shelves always come with a Restore partition which is hidden and holds a copy of the Windows install image on the hard drive. So even if you don't have a restore disk, the Restore application is able to read off that partition and allow you to reinstall Windows by way of drive-to-drive recovery.

    >Latest 10.6 Snow Leopard OS Which is Only $29

That's only for the upgrade.. not the full operating system.

The full price of OSX is actually over $150 + an additional $29 for the Snow Leopard upgrade, if you were to walk into an Apple store and inquire about prices.

The upgrade is an optional addon and it is not a full operating system. Its like a Service Pack which adds more features and bug fixes.

Though they really should release it for free because Microsoft has never charged Windows users for installing Service Packs on XP or Vista...

It is more expensive that Windows 7, considering that an OEM copy of Windows only costs $99 from Newegg.

If your looking for a disk, most manufactures have been cheaping out. There is probably a recovery partition on your hard disk. to use it, access the boot menu and select the windows recovery utility.

As for the price of windows, I don't know why they've jacked it up so high. They are probably just getting away with it right now as enough people are buying windows anyways. There's also the fact that most programs and games are designed for Windows. The one strange thing is that Windows has no place where they are the forced option for an OS. Any computer that can run windows can run Linux and a host of other free options.

Hi. That is an interesting question with many parts and I'll try to touch on all your points.

Regarding the disks, most computer manufacturers now prefer to use restore partitions that are located directly on the hard disk. This has its advantages because there are no disks to lose and is a bit more cost effective since there are no extra disks to manufacture. A disadvantage would be the fact that the partition is using space on your hard disk.

Regarding the price of Microsoft Windows OS, the cost is quite a bit more expensive than say Mac OSX from Apple. However, this may be due to the fact that Apple products are all proprietary and the same company (Apple) subsidizes and combines both elements into a specific line of products. Microsoft software seems to have more issue due to simple mechanics of numbers. Since a much larger number of users use Windows, there is a higher frequency that issues are found and reported. Also, it is a great challenge to ensure the OS is compatible and usable on a huge number of system from dozens of different vendors, whereas Apple only needs to ensure that their OS is compatible with hardware that they select and test on.

Also, when comparing the use of the Windows OS, the price may be justified in some ways, since many other pieces of software cost much more than the $319 USD retail price on Windows 7 Ultimate. Software targeted for a specific purpose such as Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended and Apple Final Cut Pro both cost a hefty $999 USD.

I think this is a fascinating topic and I tried to not be biased in my views since I currently own both a MacBook and a Gaming PC and I love them both and they both serve their purposes very well!

Because a CD or DVD costs a few cents. Multiply that by tens of thousands of computers and it starts to show on the bottom line. Putting the software on the hard drive is free.

As far as your Macbook is concerned, I'll bet money that I can find a better laptop running Windows for less money. (That's like betting that I can find a car that's prices lower than a real railroad locomotive. I can only lose if I die first.)

Windows is overpriced for the same reason Apple's products are - there's only one source. That's also why Windows computers are cheaper than Macs - competition. If you want to see an overpriced OS, look at Mac's. FreeBSD (the actual operating system) is free, but Apple charges for it. That's infinite percent overcharge.

Not sure which question you want answered--there is a lot of them here. However, your laptop does come with the genuine windows "disk" and it does have a restore "disk" it's just now a part of the computer. Usually it is a different "drive." To find out how to use it for your computer, go to your computer brand's website and look it up. Also, you can create restore disks whenever you want.

The reason the software is so expensive is because of the piracy, which is so abundant because of the price....

Of course, people still pirate cheap games and OS's.

A copy of Windows is usually on a hidden partition on a new computer's hard drive. This is accessed by a combination of keystrokes (varies by manufacturer).

Saves the manufacturer the 20c it would cost to put a copy of Windows on a DVD.
