Egypt was a superpower for a third to half of human history. The Muslim empire durign the Caliphate when Europe was in the Dark Ages was as extensive as the Roman Empire ever was (just had different land, but it held most of northern Africa).

Yes many civilizations have roots in Africa that have long history of trade such as the Swahili city states,ancient Zimbabwe , the civilizations of the Salt road and others
