Why do a lot of American students go out of state for college?

I noticed that a student from say, California, might go to a college some place in Florida. Or a student in like, New York might go to a college in Ohio. Why don't they just stay in their state? Wouldn't it be cheaper?

It would be cheaper, but it is mostly just for the adventure of it.

Students around that age want to get out and explore the world. Going to college in your home town wouldn't be very exciting.

You tend to hear all of the bad things about your local colleges, and form a bad opinion of them. Or maybe, like me, you just want to get as far away from home as you can. I was lucky that I live in a large state, and was able to be 4 1/2 hours away, and still get in-state tuition.

    1. To find the best college that has the program they need. (some close by schools may not offer every major/subject matter)

    2. To get away from parents and finally "live on your own"

    3. To do something adventurous that no one else is doing.

Source(s): I had to go many states away from my home state to find a college that offered a 4 year degree in Medical Technology.

its because we want to go to the best college that we can

so a college in California might not be as good as a college in Ohio (go ohio! x])

    anyway i hope i helped

yes its cheaper if you to go college in a state where you live, but if ppl dont like the colleges in their area, then they go to different states, so they can go to the school they want to go to. also ppl go out of state to go to better schools, some states' colleges are better than others.

Maybe we want to get away from the family, get to the best college you can that relates to what you want to get a degree on, and maybe experience how it's like to live on your own :>

We're trying to get AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE from our parents. That's not so hard to understand is it?
