Mechanical Fuel Pump Defective?

I have a 1985 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a 360cid V-8 2bbl carburator. I have a hesistation when I depress the pedal and a lack of performance. I have changed the plugs, installed a new carb, a new rotor cap, a new fuel filter and the problem persists. Today I was driving it and it stopped altogether and would not start. My feeling is that the fuel pump is shot. Suggestions? Comments? Advice?

Update:

The car would start great and run fantastic at low rpm but as soon as I would depress the pedal then it would stumble with a significan power loss. As I drove it today got 1/2 from my house and quit altogether. I already have a new fuel pump ready to install and I hope that is the remedy. If not my next step may be the distributor.

Update 2:

Thanks to all of you for the quick answers.

If it is not the fuel pump, which can be checked before you replace it, it may be your distributor, not the cap but the distributor itself. Had it happen the same way on an 86 Ford.

My dad had already changed out the fuel filter for me in 100 degree weather on blacktop. After it went another 1/2 block, he showed me that the distributor was all wobbly, shot. Got it replaced and it worked great. (He could fix anything...a great dad...taught me a lot.) Hope you figure out the problem.

Maybe or the engine is shot. Fuel pump, oil pump, old engine?

You can check the fuel pressure for cheap even if you buy the tool and check it yourself. Or take a loaner tool at AutoZone or Advance Auto and check it yourself.

    Good Luck!

Could be, but far more likely is the carb itself need rebuilt.

A vehicle that old could have lots of rust and crap in the gastank.

I think you can unfasten your fuel line where it goes into the carb, crank the motor, and see if it pumps gas.

what you have is a weak fuel pump. IT is delivering en eff fuel for low speed but not en en eff for for high speed. Replace the pump.
