Iomega Portable hard-drive, PC not picking it up, help?

I have a 500Gb iomega Prestige portable hard drive. I have had it for 6 months andit has all my pictures, music (150Gb) and movies on it.

When i plugged it in this morning the light flickered as normal than went off, my IT savvy friend says it needs to be formated, (this will of course wipe all my data) i am rather reluctant to wipe all the information and hope there is a way to get all the infomation off the drive prior to wiping it.

Help please

Update:

It is down to a corrupt fat system apparently, does that help anybody?

Try plugging it into different machines, I get problems when I move drives about at work and now some of them can only be read in 32 bit machines (even though they are just NTFS). They say they need formatting when you plug it in.

If not then there are plenty of file recovery programs out there, I had to recover some data once, sent it to a company who charged £300 and didn't manage to get much data back. I had a go and retrieved it all, in its original file structure with a bit of £20 software.
