Its what they call a "sealed transmission" - maintenance free. No checking - no worry.

On a 1997 you should worry that's getting old. There should be a 15 millimeter bolt on the side of the trans with a data placard just like the differential if fluid oozes out or you can use a stick to check the level. should be right at the bottom of the hole. I'm not sure if you check it cold or hot I'm guessing a cold check. Don't just add fluid to the port, overfilling as I'm sure your aware is a good way to kill an automatic. There may be a fill access below the brake master cylinder depends on the model if not use a hose attached to a an empty cleaned gear oil or similar bottle and just squeeze in the fluid.

Check on the left or right side of the engine block for it. When you find the oil then it is on the other side and it is not a seal transmission. I know i had one before they wreck. If you can't find it take it to a shop and they can find it and shown you where it is and they can tell what the proper level should be.

human beings in case you do no longer know then do no longer answer! I rather have actualy replaced oil in diverse Sunfires and do know precisely what i'm speaking approximately. First confident the motor vehicle must be heat (like after a 10 min stress) and that's going to be idling in park. the point plug is on the magnificent hand component of the motor vehicle, that's basically slightly in the direction of the front of the motor vehicle from the CV axle on the tip of the axle housing, you will choose a 7/sixteen wrench to take it out. you are able to dip the hollow with a small tie wrap in case you choose or you are able to upload ATF interior the fill hollow in till it drips out the point plug. The fill hollow is on precise the transmission between the left hand strut tower and the motor, this is a extensive purple cap and this is a good squeeze to get your hand in there. As for changing it, you ought to drop the pan, clean it up and replace the filter out interior (you ought to pull down very difficult on filter out to do away with it, that's pushed up with the aid of a rubber seal). Then merely replace the pan and fill up, have the point plug screwed in loosely nicely filling, while refilling merely start up via including approximately 4.5 liters of ATF and then start up the motor vehicle and shift it with the aid of each and every of the gears with you foot on the brake, this could pass the ATF to all of the suited places so which you would be able to have an precise examining while verify the point, now do away with the point plug and upload ATF in till it drips out, replace the point plug and verify out stress, then recheck the point and verify it nonetheless drips out, the point would strengthen on the try stress wherein case you are able to merely permit it drain back out of the point plug till it reaches the point returned. that's not that difficult in the journey that your patiant yet bear in recommendations one little speck of airborne dirt and dust can wreak an automated transmission, so so you might verify each and every thing is clean. in case you actualy have a handbook equipment field then ignore regarding the above, there's a point plug 0.5 way up the back of the transmission case, merely do away with that to be sure point, additionally drain plug in backside of case, the two allen head. sturdy good fortune!

Some of the new compaq cars, with sidewayz motors, have the tranny dip stick almost hidden, Iv found one before It was sitting directly on top of the tranny. So i would have to say look closely, like under the hoses and brake cylinder down around that area, but directly on top.
