Is orthodontic headgear used in the UK?
I'm 20 years old and in the process of getting braces at leeds dental institute.
My dentist was talking to me about refering me to the orthodontics and started talking about headgear!
He said that when they pull your teeth back wards soemtimes your back ones want to move forward and they can prevent this by using headgear.
He however finished his sentence saying that it is rarely used in the UK!
Has anyone else had it?

I would be more worried about having your teeth retracted (pulled back) because that type of treatment has been shown to cause TMJ problems. Such treatment and headgear use should have died along with the Middle Ages. It would be in your best interest to refuse extraction and have expansion done instead. At your age you may need to wear a retainer at bedtime for life but that's better than having TMJ and the nightmare that goes with it and then having to undo the treatment you went through in order to correct the TMJ problem. Look for another orthodontist who will do non extraction treatment.
