If you were advising a high school girl on how to get through high school, what would you tell her?
What are some helpful rules and suggestions for getting by socially and scholastically? My niece is a sophomore this year and asked me for help, but I don't know what to tell her. Any help would be appreciated!

Socially-
* Don't get caught up in the small stuff. There is a lot of gossip and it's best to stay out of it and don't trust everything you hear.
* Try attending different clubs and activities to meet new people. You can meet people with common interests and have different types of friends.
* Don't worry about dating in high school. If it happens, take it slow. If it doesn't, that's normal! There's so many more opportunities to meet people after high school, especially if you attend college.
Scholastically-
* Take a variety of classes. Take classes for fun and to learn about things that interest you. When you take classes you love, they won't seem like hard work!
* If you have a question, ask it! If you don't want to ask in front of other students, talk to your teacher outside of class.
* Keep up in classes, even if it cuts a little into social time or hobbies. It's a lot easier to do a little work every day and understand what's going on in class than to do everything the night before it's due and have questions you don't have time to get answers for.
* Learn how to take notes that work for you! During class start taking notes even if the teacher doesn't ask you to. You'll get better at taking notes over time (and that's really helpful for college!) and you'll be more likely to remember stuff from class. Win, win!
Good luck!

Be nice to people. Take their feelings into account. That will get you friends no matter what anyone says, if you keep at it.
Try to study at least a little. A lot of kids don't understand that studying for ten minutes is better than not doing it at all, and that a B is better than an F. So if she has scholastic troubles, baby steps help.

Don't let the idiots get to you, and find a good group of friends you can count on.
