What is the basic monthly cost of living in Manhattan, NYC?
I'm a South African student looking to work as a waiter in Manhattan for my summer holiday. (your winter) I dont really want something super fancy, just a room to sleep in. What are the average costs i'm loooking at in terms of rent, utilities, food and tube passes etc?
Thanks for the help, it's much appreciated!

It all depends on how frugal you want to be... i don't know where to put the average that u mentioned. but.. if u are a waiter, u earn about hundred a day (cash)....so let's say u make 600 per week, u multiply that by four...which is 2400 dollars per month.
u can find a roommate from craiglist...in cheap areas like brooklyn or bronx for 600 a month and add extra 50 to 100 for utilities....
u have to pay for subway fare..food...and to buy clothes...
u probably will have several hundreds a month to spend for ur own material...
from these, u can figure out the average cost of living...
