My guitarist is having difficulties with me songwriting wise. Help?

He wants to have every song improv. When I want to write a song he says its "too structured." I try to bring things to him that say "VERSE 1 CHORUS VERSE 2 PRECHORUS CHORUS OUTTRO." Like that and he says "I CANT DO THAT! I CANT PLAY THE SAME THING TWICE!" I said that thats a problem and we need to fix it but he yelled at me. He just wants to sit there and play whatever and experiment all day but I don't wanna be in a band like that. Our band practices turn to crap because our drummer does that too. No one is on the same page. How can I save us?

If you're a jam band, noodling all the time is more or less what your audience would expect.

If you're not a jam band, then it's not - in the bands I've been in that have been even moderately successful, the focus has been on writing the song, then STICKING TO IT. If anyone wants to noodle around, they can do a solo.... the rest of the song needs to have structure if you want it to "hit". Look at every single song on the radio - structure.

Even noodling has to be based around some type of a structure, though, if it's going to be melodic and meaningful.

For a band to "work" everyone has to be on the same page. If they aren't, it's time to find a new band.

Don;t bother "saving" anything. Get into a new band. If you're going to be a musician your whole life, you're going to be in many bands anyway. If you like these guys, jam with them too. There's no law that says you can't be in multiple bands. I've been in as many as 4 or 5 at a time. Over the years, these dudes will float in and out of your life. No sweat, just find some new dudes.

This is like a whole lot of rock bands. Namely the stones. Mick wanted to be more flashy while keith was more about rock. I think what you guys should do is make a compromise. He can go off on his songs that he chooses to improvise on while your songs are just straightforward songs.

    Obviously, he's an idiot.

    He needs to mature musically.

Show him that EVERY GOOD SONG HAS STRUCTURE.

    Jesus.

People like that piss me off.

    /end rant.

I agree, he needs to be told to shut up or get out.
