Ok, this is the reason. The remaining 50,000 troops are not there to conduct combat operations. They are there to help shore up the Iraqi government. The troops that left were the ones performing combat missions. Not everyone in Iraq does or sees combat. I was kicking in doors and patrolling an MSR for a year and doing all kinds of checkpoints at three am. My friends brother worked at Finance in BIAP on an 8-4 job and pretty much had weekends off. Though we were both there at the same time, who do you think had a more interesting war? He was a support troop, and I was doing combat missions. That means that he would have been staying, while I went to Kuwait and waited for 2 weeks for the Iraqi government to collapse.

You can be in the First Cav it's not the unit, it is the mission.

This is only vaguely a military question but as you are confused on military issues, I'll answer. There is no such thing as a battle brigade. All Soldiers are Combat troops in one form or another. What has happened is the remaining Soldiers in Iraq are not there to conduct combat operations. They are there in an advise an assist role. This really isn't anything new. Brigades that left Iraq as early as 2008 in the right areas did an entire tour without firing a round. The war has changed.

The troops that are remaining ares suppose to either aid the Iraqis with logistics or provide training. Those with combat mos's are best for training Iraqis combat techniques. In addition, there are still about 50,000 troops left. You would not want to leave US troops in a place without having combat troops to protect our guys.

The combat troops were taken out. they clearly say that there are 5000+ soldiers still there. From what I understand a unit just has to classify themselves as something other then a combat unit to stay.
