BIG PROBLEM red eared slider?

so we bought a turtle on craigs list to be a classroom pet for my mom. lol and the ppl said that it was a eastern painted turtle. Well we took it home and did research on it..and we found out that its actually a red eared slider and needs a 120 gallon tank!!!!! Stupid craigs list hillbillies....grrrrrrr. So now we are stuck with this poor turtle who has been living in a 10 gallon aquarium his whole entire life and is 6 in long. We have a 50 gallon tank but my mom said no beacause its wayyyy to big to bring anywhere. So then i suggested getting a pre formed pond but that really wont work because its going to be in my moms classroom. So we have a 40 gallon tank and i know that is WAYY too small but i always take him outside during the day and let him crawl in the grass and swim in the kiddie pool. So will the 40 be ok for the time being? PLEASE dont criticize me. Im doing my best

Update:

i CANT use the 50

Yes that is okay. It is of course alot better then a 10 gallon. A 40 gallon would be good and the turtle would be alot happier to have a bigger home. It is nice of you to do your best for this turtle and I know i wouldn't criticize you.

    Good Luck with your turtle!

    baby 10-20 gallons

    juvenile 30-50 gallons

    adult 50+ gallons

    baby's are 2-3 inches long

    juveniles are 3-5 inches long

    adults are 5+ inches long

so a 40 gallon might be a bit to small. you should use the 50 gallon cause even if the 40 gallon is ok

your turtle will grow to around 9 to 12 inches ad need at least a 50 gallon.

YEa the 40 gall will probably work, I have 2 big 7 in turtles in a 40, and i hate that its so dang small but hey that will work. I just make sure i take them out like you do in the grass and run around, so they have somewhere to go. Hope it all works out. And whatever you do dont let them go free, give it to a friend if you dont want it. Its illegal and not a good idea. BUt yea good luck! :D

you say its 6 inches long so i guess it will be about 4-6 years old , and yes a 40 gallon maybe ok for a year (if it has been kept in a 10 gallon it will like it for a while) but it will start getting bored and you will have to upgrade

If you can't use the 50, then return the turtle. It is NOT fair to the turtle. You buy it, you've got to take care of it. The 40 could work, but it could die of stress. Sorry, I'm just telling you the way it is.
