Because of history and geography : the choice of Britain since the 18. century has been to make European States fight against one another lest one of them might dominate the continent and be able to isolate Britain ; geography shows that Europe is a continent and England an island. Britain likes to use Europe for its own good but dislikes serving any European common interest. And because Britain was among the winners of World War Two so they did not see any use in strengthening Europe while posing as a savior.

Because the UK is an island, Brits see themselves as separate. They also like to think of themselves as a little superior to their neighbours - better currency, the local superpower militarily, the richest nation...etcetera. Many of them are also nostalgic about their imperial days. Britain and the empire. What they don't realise is that Britain does not have an empire any more, but they cannot let go of this. Britain is a stagnating nation, grasping desperately to the past and glory from centuries ago, believing that Britain will always soldier on. Well, I've got news for my fellow Brits - if we refuse to cooperate and work as a team, our weak little pound will be dwarfed by other global currencies and we will be pushed to the sidelines as the new superpowers line up and bring their economies into gear - I'm talking the EU (if we are not part of it), the US, Russia, China, India, south east Asia, Brazil...most of the world, in fact. How can a tiny little island like us hope to compete with the likes of China? We need teammates. We cannot go it alone - it is hopelessly proud and naive to believe that.

Free trade and movement of people is good for the economy. The EU also gives us a bigger voice in world affairs when we need it. Not all people in the UK (remember, England is not the UK, it is merely a part of it) are against the EU, eurosceptics are just far more vocal about their opinions as they currently do not have their own way.

We do not wish to loose control of our currency. In time of trouble we can drop interest rates without asking all the other nations first, keeping our economy strong. If you look at what happened to Greece you will see the perils of not being in control of your Nations money.

We are part of the EU as it makes sense to trade with the nations closest to you.
