Apparently I have no sound card. Can I get some help?

We have a Compaq Presario SR1617CL. We had sound coming from a small mp3 player speaker. The cord on that device broke, so we went without sound for quite some time. One day a bit after the speaker broke (hm... a month or two?) We noticed that the sound icon on the bottom right corner near the clock was missing. We got a virus this summer, cleared that up without taking it to a shop, and all seemed well.

Now I have ear phones, and am trying to pull up volume control to fix that problem so I can hear music. I went through a bunch of stuff at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/T... Windows support, and it said that we have no sound card!

How could this have happened? I mean, we had sound, and now it says we don't even have a card. Has this happened to anyone else? Anyone know why it might? Do I have to go purchase a new card?!

I am sorry this is so long. Please help!

You don't have a sound card. You never have.

Your sound is processed by the CPU, not through a sound card.

At any rate, its because you reinstalled your OS after the virus. Re installation of the OS usually means that it deletes the drivers for the sound.

    Download the driver software here:

Install it, reboot, and you should have sound.

    Good luck.

The Virus might have disabled your sound card to re-enable it, Go to start Right click computer, go to manage in the menu that comes up.

In the window that comes up go to the device manager (in the bar on the left side), when the list of parts in your computer appears click the triangle next to Sound, Video and Game Controllers and right click the device listed there.

First disable and re-enable it if that does not work hit the Update Driver software button that appears when you right click the drive and follow the on screen instructions.

    Onboard audio or audio card

    *

    Controller: AC97 audio

    *

    Location: Integrated

    Motherboard manufacturer's name: ASUS A8AE-LE

Go to Compaq's site and look for sound card drivers.
