Anybody got some ideas for decorating a dorm room?

I just moved back to school and my room looks like a prison cell. I'm not feeling particularly creative right now, and I could use some ideas for decorating. Last year, I had a Beatles poster above my desk (left it at home because I had waaaaaayy too much Beatles stuff at school and it seemed a little too "weird" or obscure), a bunch of pictures of family and high school friends, some quotes, notes from my family, coloring book pages (I got really bored!), and a couple of drawings from my little cousin.

I want to do some different stuff this year- I don't want so much Beatles stuff (poster, calendar, quotes, etc.), and 80% of my photos were people that I really don't hang out with anymore (and I don't have many pics with college friends)

Help!

Just pick a base colour(black, white, brown, tan, beige...) and your favourite colour(trim). I would suggest:

    green/brown

    blue/brown

    black/pink

    white/red

    white/rainbow

Just use whatever base colour (or a similar shade) you choose for the furniture, and a trim colour for the pillows/rugs/curtains/decorations. You should worry about the big stuff first, and get around to putting the finishing touches later. You could also use a stencil to paint patterns on the walls, and incorporate that pattern into other areas of the room.

Also, go on google and search for model rooms. You can get really good ideas from them.

Go out to random stores and browse through for ideas. Maybe that lamp could work with that pattern you like, or the rugs match the pillows.

Do whatever you like. It's your room, and you should love it.

    Good Luck and Happy Decorating!

Go to a resale shop-pickup a large mirror for little $-with the reflection and bouncing the light off of it, it'll make your dorm room seem larger. Try a lucky bamboo in rocks, filled with water for a plant-it needs indirect light and no maintenance. Get the 3-m product that is an adhesive hook, but pulls off when it's time to leave your dorm, without ruining the wall. You can buy several of the hooks, and hang your favorite hats on them, or your favorite scarves, necklaces, etc... Use your stuff to display yet be stored too. Hope that helps- just remember to use what you have or repurpose what you have at home. If you don't live far, maybe pick up some things.

    Good Luck-

I would start by going to TJ Maxx if you have one in your area because they have stuff that's really cheap and it can give you color schemes or just themes in general to start off with your room. I have a study and a bedroom in my dorm and I made my study Paris themed because I found cool stuff at TJ Maxx that was interesting. I got a Paris calendar, a poster of the Eiffel Tower, some vinyl wall decals (really cheap on amazon.com), and then the rest I just went off of the colors on the calendar which were black and light pink and just got a bunch of desk stuff at TJ Maxx that matched the colors. I also found cute picture frames there that were nice and fit well with my theme.

You really just have to be open-minded, I guess.

Maybe even look at Bed Bath & Beyond for some cool wall hangings. Kohl's may have stuff that you could make into a theme.

I don't know if you have a favorite color, but you could start with that. For example, my favorite color is robin's egg blue so I found a comforter, pillow, and a bunch of other stuff that was that color and just made a theme based on a color.

    Good luck.

I agree with jbean! A large mirror is extremely helpful when you want to make your room appear larger and to take advantage of any natural light you may have. I have used For Rent.com's Apartment Living Blog, http://blog.forrent.com/apartment-decorating-tips, for ideas on decorating and arranging furniture.

In addition to decor, try to remember the comfort aspect of your room. You'll be spending hours there studying and just having a great time with friends. Here are a few items you may want to add to your packing list: a large rug, a feather bed mattress topper, good lighting, a comfortable place to sit, closet accessories, a large bulletin board or white board and filing space. Good luck!

etsy is a great website to find one-of-a-kind stuff, artsy photos are good for decorating while you're in the dorm and you can still use them when you graduate
