So I guess when you are doing homework, then, you are up to no good?

    Anyways,

    {x - [f - (-x)] + [x - f]} - 3x

since there is no equal sign, I guess you're just supposed to simplify.

Use PEMDAS for order of operations:

    {x - [f + x] + [x - f]} - 3x

    {x - f - x + [x - f]} - 3x

    {x - f - x + x - f} - 3x

    -2f + x - 3x

    -2f - 2x

All of the different bracket styles are equivalent in this case.

Their just used to keep you from going cross-eyed looking at:

    (x - (f - (-x)) + (x - f)) - 3x

which means exactly the same thing, but some think it's harder to read.
