Are acronyms necessary?

Stuff like BYO.

Are we becoming lazy or what?

    Perhaps a bit lazy, but they are useful. Just ask the military. Also, they help assure that only people in the "in-group" (military, internet, etc.) can read your messages with ease. They also identify people as part of that in-group.

    What does BYO mean? I try to use as few acronyms as I can in my speech and my writing, yet that doesn't prevent others from using them and me being confused.
