Top 3 Albums in Order (no real shockers here)
1) Master of Puppets
-How can it not be? It's true it is not really a Thrash album, more a Heavy metal album with several great Thrash tracks. But what A heavy Metal album it is. Cliff Burton's playing and composition was at it's tops, and one can only dream of what might have come had he lived. James had hit a perfect midpoint vocally, still able to scream like his earlier albums, but also add more melodic vocals. The guitars and riffs are perfection. Simply said there is not a single weak moment on this album, and in fact I still consider it the finest Metal album recorded, 24 years later.
2) Ride the Lightning
- Fabulous work. Even though many purist were already waving the sell-out banner because of the tracks Fade to Black and Call of Ktulu, it was obvious that Metallica was going to be special for something far more than just speed and aggression. For Whom the Bell Tolls really sums up the awesomeness of the whole album.
3) ...And Justice For All
- Truth to tell, this would have topped Ride teh Lightning.. if only it had a freaking bass-line. And even with that annoying "wahahahahah" distortion it STILL manages to be my 3rd favorite. The dense layering on this albums guitar was almost Prog in it's intensity and workmanship, and this album Lars truly shined like no other. Truly their most mature and progressive album, ever.
I know to some me not listing Kill Em All reeks of blasphemy, but while it was a milestone, and revolutionary... it was also very one dimensional, and simply does not hold my attention as well as their more mature and complete later albums do. It was still 10x the debut of Killing is My Business... and Business is Good, or Show No Mercy, but it still lacked any real depth.
My Top 10 Tracks: (I will focus on Original songs only. Though it is hard to leave their amazing cover of "Am I Evil" out.)
1) For Whom the Bell Tolls
2) Call of Ktulu
3) Orion
4) The Thing That Should Not be
5) Fade to Black
6) Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
7) One
8) Sad But True
9) ...And Justice for All
10) Master of Puppets
mind you, the tracks do vary from month to month..... there are certainly times where a track like Master of Puppets would be rated much higher, or when I might list Harvester of Sorrow of And Justice for all... that is just how I am feeling tonight.
and for some extra credit..my top 5 songs that Metallica has covered from other bands:

-Best Metal song ever written
2) Breadfan (Budgie)
3) Blitzkrieg (Blitzkrieg)
