Can I Use a 65-watt, 18.5V 3.5A Power Adapter on an HP DV7 Laptop?
It says on HP website that the DV7 notebook comes with a 90-watt adapter. A 90-watt adapter has 19V and 4.74A. Their "HP adapter finder" says a 65-watt adapter is not compatible with DV7.
However, upon removing the battery of the notebook, a sticker says Input: 18.5V, 3.5A and 19V, 4.74A. I am not entirely what that means.

It means that the battery can be charged with either a 65 watt or 90watt charger. The battery is common to more that one model of HP computer. However the DV 7 comes with a dual core processor and requires a 90 watt power supply to operate properly (not go up in smoke). If your computer had a quad core it would require 120 watts so it would have come with a charger/converter that was rated at that. (to figure out watts multiply volts x amps). The short answer is no a 65 watt power source is not usable with your computer, you need the extra juice for proper operation and to not smoke check something. Spend the extra money and get the correct parts it will be cheaper than a new computer....

No it will not. I searched up the charger for your laptop (DV7 isn't the most specific you can get so it was hard) but in general it will not work. The one you need is exactly what you said, 90watt 19v 4.74a.
You can't use a 65watt, the powering is too low, and the 3.5 will overheat the charger which will give you problems.
Just get a replacement. I would also highly recommend buying from http://www.topmic.com/ because they provide free shipping along with free lifetime warranties on all their products. Plus, they have a 30 day money back guarantee if you aren't satisfied with your purchase. The shipping and lifetime warranty are well worth it.

Good luck!

The one thing you don't mention is if the output is AC or DC. If the connectors are the same size, as far as the specs go, it looks like it will work. How do you tell if it's AC or DC? Many power adapters simply say it (AC/DC) with the output data. If yours does, you simply didn't put it in your post. If it doesn't say, you have to look for a symbol. The symbol for DC is three dots with a solid line segment over the 3 dots. For AC you get a tilde (wave symbol) over the 3 dots. The laptop supply is definitely is DC. As long as the other is DC also, then go ahead. If you don't see any symbol, you need to get hold of a digital meter which will tell you for sure. Good Luck.
