It depends how your project is to be submitted. On my computer at home I have both, and in Open Office I can read documents that were created in Microsoft Office. Also in Microsoft Office 2007 I can read documents that were created in Open Office.
Unfortunately, when I email those Open Office documents or transfer them by Flash Drive to another computer that doesn't have Open Office, I cannot access them with Microsoft Office 2003 on there. Maybe MS 2003 doesn't have the compatibility to read Open Office.
If you're printing your project to hand in to school, then you could download the free Open Office program. To submit your project by email, you need to be sure if your school and the tutors actually have this program on their computers.

If you can't buy Microsoft office, open office is a good free alternative. It does not have all of the bells and whistles like Microsoft, but it's a good basic program. Unless there are features that your school requires that happens to be a feature that the open office programs don't have, then you should not have any problems.
I'm not sure why the poster stated to you that you can't save it in Microsoft format because that is totally untrue. All you have to do is click File/Save-as and then select "Microsoft Powerpoint" for the .ppt format.

Yup download it! It's pretty much the same thing or a more basic version of microsoft word. My school used to use it since we didn't have microsoft word on it until now. I also used it for a while until I got a new computer.

Have you ever considered SSuite Office as a free alternative to MS Office?
Their software also doesn't need to run on Java or .NET, like MS Office and so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small, efficient, and easy to use. :)
