Yeah, that's complete overkill. To run those games maxed all you need is a $125-$175 card like a GTS 250 or Radeon 5770 (and a decent dual-core or better CPU).
High-end cards like that are for playing bleeding-edge first-person shooters like Crysis and Bad Company 2.

Remember when looking for heavy duty graphic cards, make sure you have a heavy duty power supply, for instance a Sapphire HD 5970 TOXIC with 4 GB of memory needs a 850 watt power supply to run it, that's $1000.00 for Sapphire Toxic HD 5970 (see Sapphire site) and $179.00 for say a Corsair TX 850 W (watt) power supply. ATI HD 5850 requires a 500 watt power supply, around $350.00 and can run any game out now. ATI HD 5670 for $129.00 with 400 watt power supply is a cheaper way to run all games out now, but not maxed out. A hd 5850 is an entry level heavy duty video card. For maxing the New Games out now a HD5870 or HD 5970 the way to go, check out amd ati graphic cards (site) for required power supplys. Comparable Nvidia cards require more electricity, you will pay more monthly bills, it adds up over time.

You don't even need anything that expensive for those games, an HD5850 or a GTX460 1GB would be more than enough.
