    work inside out with brackets

    30/42 - (-7/42 - 48/42)

    30/42 - (-55/42)

    30/42 + 55/42

    85/42

    12+3(3^2-1) / 2*3-4

    12+3(9-1) / 2*3-4

    12+24/2*3-4

    12+(12*3)-4

    48-4=

    44

Make them all the same common denominator first, then add:

    5/7 = 30/42

    1/6 = 7/42

    8/7 = 48/42

    So, 30/42 -(-7/42-48/42) = 85/42

    As for the other one, 12+3(3^2-1)/2(3)-4 = 12 + 3(9-1)/6-4 = 12 + 24 / 2 = 12 + 12 = 24, assuming the parentheses were correctly placed.

Here are some tips that will help you solve any such problem.

Always evaluate what is inside parentheses or brackets first.

Look up the topic 'operator precedence' in computer books or on the net. That will give you an idea about how to evaluate something like 2*2+3 when there are no brackets. This is evaluated as (2*2)+3 = 4+3=7.
