What are i3, i5, and i7 Intel Core processors?

It actually depends a LOT on what you are doing with the laptop. If you are just looking at websites, listening to music, and chatting on a Instant Messenger, then you will probably find the i5 better performing as those applications aren't programmed for making use of more cores. If you plan on playing games, edit pictures, video, or audio or have 10 programs open at once, then you will want the i7. If the latter also describes what you are doing, then you will want a dedicated GPU, instead of relying on the integrated graphics.

You want to stick with i7 and i5 processors for the most part, but nothing that UL or ULV in it's model name. If you are going for high performance then you definitely want the i7 with a dedicated card. If you are a normal computer user, than an i5 with it's integrated graphics will do you just fine.

As for the i7 GHz question, it has 4 cores that each operate at 1.6GHz if they are all being used at once. The fact that it is hyper-threaded does not mean that it is 1.6x4x2 because that is not how hyperthreading works, hyperthreading just lets the 1.6GHz in one core be spread out through two different tasks at once but those tasks are both sharing that 1.6GHz (someone commented that hyperthreading is like having an extra 1.6, which is wrong). But if only 3 cores, or 2 cores, or even a single core is being used on the i7, then it can idle the cores that are not being used by reducing power to a fraction of what it would normally use, and increase the speed of the cores that are being used. So it depends on what the computer is doing at the moment, and if you were to monitor it in real time, then you would see the speed of your processors cores frequently changing.

When buying a laptop pay attention to how many cores it has and how many GHz. A intel i7 with 4 cores and 1.6GHz will be faster then an i3 with 2 cores at 2.66 GHz.

1.6GHz is the clock speed of that CPU, in essence, the higher the number, the faster it runs. All new CPUs nowadays will have more than one core, the more cores, the better also.

in terms of power, it goes from i3, through to i5 with i7s being your top end expensive yet powerful selection.

well since its a core i7 1.6 Ghz it has 4 cores then it should be multiplied by 2 cause it has hyper threading.

So at regular conditions the computation should be 1.6 X 4 X 2 so it should at 12.8 Ghz without being over-clocked
