Help with my career please?

Hello! I'm in an extremely worrying situation because everyone around me knows what they want to do and I should, but I don't. I am taking Biology, Chemistry and Psychology and have been predicted AAB, the B being in Chemistry. This rules Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science out.

I would like to go to a decent UK university and study something that I enjoy and pays extremely well, possibly eventually up to £70k +. I'm willing to work hard for it. I just don't know what I want to do. I have considered Clinical Psychology, Midwifery, Nursing, Audiology and Speech Science and still I have no idea. Please can you help me. Any suggestions and routes to take would be great. Thanks

Only you can answer this question. You need to do some hard thinking. What is it you enjoy doing? What career really appeals to you and can you imagine doing that in 5 or 10 years time? What do you have a passion for? Is the amount of money you earn more important than enjoying your job?

Go to your careers service and ask them about the jobs you mentioned, research what it is actually like working in those fields, the bad and the good. You need to know what you like doing, working in a team or managing one? Working alone or lots of people around you? Will the amount of money you earn determine your happiness?

    Good luck.

If the B in Chemistry rules out Medicine and similar subjects, and you really have your heart set on getting into this area, then have you considered taking some extra tuition, or taking a year out after your A levels, to get an A grade in Chemistry. You might also be able to study other subjects during that period, and get some work experience in a relevant area that would stand you in good stead.

You might also want to consider Biochemistry, or Pharmacology, as more scientific areas that you could go into. Also Environmental Science is a possibility. If however you want a more person-oriented area, you could consider Psychology, and pursue a career in Psychology or an are where this is useful, such as Social Work.

But ultimately, all these are just ideas, you have to ask yourself, what actually floats your boat? What do you enjoy doing? You've already mentioned four possibilities yourself, only you can decide whether any of them appeal to you.

Incidentally, you might have to scale down your salary expectations. To get £70k+ you would probably have to get into one of the medically related areas.

Which brings me to another point. If you have to choose, would you prefer a boring job which pays well, or an interesting job, which is perhaps not so well paid? The fact is that most people do have to make that choice. If the pay is the most important thing, you could consider something in finance or accountancy.

jobs abroad are certainly an exciting notion, but you have to be really watchful of the law-related implications, if you don't effect your research correctly, there can be undesirable effects! The site in the box below has lots of tips on jobs abroad, my buddy unearthed it, now he is a barman in Tasmania!
