How can I update my ipod touch without deleting all my data?

I want to update my ipod touch firmware to download Epic Citadel. But since I reformatted my laptop, I've lost all the songs from it and if I update my firmware it will sync will it not?

So how can I update the firmware without losing all the music (and apps for that matter) from my ipod?

Please help! I'll vote for best answer. :)

Also: I have an Ipod Touch 3rd Generation 32GB if that makes any difference.

make sure, you don't have your ipod syncing automatically. Then plug in your ipod and on itunes click your ipod name and click transfer purchases. then go your itunes folder and copy it on your desktop, then after you update, replace your itunes folder with the folder you have on your desktop. then all your apps, music, etc. will appear in itunes. this is how I backup my library

What you may prefer to do is click on your iPod on iTunes, scroll to the backside of the exhibit show, and press the create a backup (or something like that). Then as quickly as you replace it, you may press restoration and your backup which you made will seem as a restoration determination.

this is impossible without deleting it off the ipod. you will have to first sync all of the music and apps back on the computer and then you can update. HAVE IT BACKED UP ON 2 COMPUTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS COULD DELETE DATA AND BE LOST FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DON'T WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
