What type of questions should be asked when renting an apartment with a friend?

1) Are we on the same lease, or different leases?

2) If one of us moves before the lease is up, how do we handle that?

and for the roommate...

3) Whose name will the utilities be in? What day will the other person pay their half?

4) What day can each pay your half of the rent?

5) How do we split up chores?

6) How do we handle groceries/household necessities?

7) What are the rules for friends over?

8) What are the rules for overnight guests (including boyfriends)?

9) What are the rules for sharing belongings, like clothes?

10) Can either of us get a pet?

11) Can either of us throw a party? What are the limits?

Discussing all of this up front will prevent a LOT of arguments and misunderstanding later.
