Rent a scooter and see the island for yourself. The roads are safe and there is little crime.Non-stop once around the island takes about an hour or so.There is an old fort in Marigot on the north side.Orient beach is very beautiful with a large area to the south that is clothing optional.(nudists).Nudism is tolerated at all the beaches but not too prevalent to make non-nudists uncomfortable.Great food as well as the usual fast food places. Truly a duti-free island if you like jewelry or watches.T-shirts can be found 5/$10.The people are very nice.Dutch south and French north. If you stop for a drink like I did ask if gratuities are included. I left a 20% tip only later I found he already took 15%.Caution; many people rent a car and leave all their valuables in the trunk(boot) for safe keeping. There are only so many cars/keys on the island.Criminals will remove these secure items without notice.Love the place though and will go back again.

I have visited St. Maarten several times, and have never found a shore excursion that interested me. Instead, I normally do some shopping, which is simply wonderful, and have lunch at the Green House restaurant, which is by the beach. The beach -- it is right there, clean, clear, and lovely! You can leave the ship and either walk or take a water taxi from the ship into town -- walkable, but water taxi's are inexpensive and fun, too! (Buy the round trip ticket, which is easier for the return.) St. Maarten is a great place, and the ship will dock on the Dutch side, which has the great shopping and beach. If you want to go to the French side, you will need a taxi, and will find much less shopping but some very nice and somewhat pricey restaurants. Enjoy!

Don't know what ship you are on but I will be on the Carnival Victory which will be calling on St Maarten on April 9th My suggestions are to take a taxi to Maho beach and watch the planes come in, The planes come in about 20 ft above the beach.

Also I am para-sailing with Size Matters para-sailing

You don't say what you're interested in doing. St. Martin/St. Maarten [it's both French and Dutch] has nice beaches and nice shopping. You can just grab a cab at the port and head to a beach or walk downtown.

A great source of info about what to do in every port is CruiseCritic.com. Click on "Boards" then go to "Ports of Call".

shopping is great. Look for electronics and price shop. If not-head to the beach-rent some snorkel gear and a cabana for the day.
