How Did The Cars In The 30' and 40"s keep The Radiator From Freezing?

My friend is rebuilding a 1932 Ford Flat v 8 like the American Grafitti Car. It is really cool. He has it running and is concerned about the radiator since we live on the East Coast. Did they have anti -freeze back then? He does not think so. Anybody have a car or know somebody on the EC than knows how they kept from freezing. He took the car to a show in Jersey and the guy who played John Milliner was there. Paul Lamont. He was supposed to bring the car but it was still in California being worked on. So any thoughs would be appreciated. Thanks for your time!

They often in the past used ethyl alcohol, which is the alcohol that is in wine, beer, and whiskey etc. Alcohol added to water will lower its freezing point.

There have been urban legends circulating that drunks could be found under cars drinking the coolant in the past.

Antifreeze is POSION. DO NOT DRINK ANY TYPE!!! NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK IT IS!!! IT WILL KILL YOU!!!

Modern antifreeze is better for your cooling system because it does a number of things.

    It lowers the freezing point.

Believe it or not it raises the boiling point.

It contains corrosion inhibitors that protect the coolant passages in the engine.

Use modern antifreeze in your car; this will be much better for it.

They used alcohol then but it was clear alcohol.

In the Soviet Union it was common to take the water out of the car at night and put it on the stove overnight and pour it in the next day, but that was years ago.

Antifreeze goes back to Model A Fords or earlier and I have Factory Service Bulletins to prove it. Ford had TSB's in the thirties believe it or not.

the transmission fluid leak has nothing to do with the fan ! if the thermostat is stuck closed then the engine will get too hot and should trigger the fan to start blowing ! but you say the fan not coming on so it could be the fan sensor !

Yes, they had anti- freeze back then, but it was not as good and clean as what we use to day.
