The router is in another room with one cable at the room with the computers. Can I split this cable into two connections for two computers? what device would i use? is that what a switch does?

Get a cheap 4 port switch, as this will handle the network bandwidth better than a hub. Switches are 'smart' devices that will split network data and send it to the appropriate computer, instead of sending everything to both computers simultaneously.

Plug the upstream port of the switch into the port on the router the computer is currently plugged into, then plug each computer into a separate downstream port on the switch.

That said, does'nt the router itself has a spare port you can plug computer number two into?

You can't just split the cable because each PC needs a unique IP address on your network. You need a router with at least 2 connections. You connect the hub to the phone line and run an Ethernet cable form the hub to each of the PC's. Each port on the router has a different address so each PC has a unique IP on your network.

Yes, you would use a switch. You could use a second network card in one of the computers, but that computer would have to be on whenever the other one is on.

Get a 4 port hub. Usually very cheap to get.
