My browser keeps being redirected...Virus?

I recently had a bunch of Viruses get on my computer, I still am cleaning them up but I got most of them. But my browser (Firefox and Internet Explorer) is not working. I think it may still be infected. What happens is I can go on my browser and everything works fine, but when I type something in on Google, Yahoo, ask, etc, and click one of the links that the search displays, it redirects me to a random site. So If I type in "Laptop" in the search and a link for Wikipedia comes up, if I click it it will take me to a random site about laptops for sale.

What is the name of this infection? Thanks, 10 point to right answer!

    Hi,

    please do this :-

you have a really bad virus and the only thing to kill it is "Malwarebytes", some times this virus blocks anti-virus sites so download it using another system on to a Flash drive then use the flash drive to install it onto the infected system, then reboot and then run a FULL scan of your system, if this fails try this, reboot and press F8 as it boots up, this will take you into safe mode, then run a Full scan again.

If it is still blocked & won’t install try this:-

When it asks you where you would like to save it, change the "mbam_setup.exe" file to xxxxx.exe.

Then install it, update it, and run a full scan in Safe mode.

This will clear your system of this virus.

    http://malwarebytes.org/

This is also one of the best free anti-spyware programs; again always run your anti-virus software in “Safe Mode” on full scan.

    http://www.superantispyware.com/

This will all help you and are completely FREE downloads.

    Trust me this does work.

Simple version of what to do:-

Download “Malwarebytes” onto a UBS Memory stick using a friends system

Use the Filehippo links as these are completely FREE

    http://filehippo.com/

    Reboot your system

As it boots up press (tap) F8

When in SAFE MODE install “Malwarebytes” using your USB Stick copy

When installed, run a full scan of your HDD

Reboot back into main windows again

Update “Malwarebytes” using the update tab page

Run another full scan of your HDD

Trust me this will not harm your system at all, only kill any bad stuff that's on it.

This is completely FREE and easy to do and WORKS, so why not try this first??

    P.S

    thanks for the points

You are infected with the "Search Redirect Virus" (also known as the Google Redirect Virus). This virus can manipulate your search results, so that when you click a link it will take you to a random website, usually an advertisement. It is also difficult to detect or remove using your conventional anti virus.

This is down to how the virus infects your system. A virus would normally attempt to install software or run a process designed to harm your system, which your anti virus can detect and remove rather easily. However, the Redirect Virus manages to infect a system file, allowing it to bypass this method of detection and still cause the redirects.

The system file in question is one that handles all redirect requests, such as those made by search engines once you click a link. This is a normal process and the reason why all your browsers are affected by this is that all browsers use this file. Once the virus has infected the file, this allows it to redirect you from your desired search result to a random website, usually an advertisement designed to make the hacker who designed the virus money.

The best way to remove this virus would be to use software called ComboFix. This is a very effective program at removing this infection as it has been specifically designed for this type of job. You will need a tutorial and one that I always use is here:

Sounds like a rootkit virus it can hijack your browser but without any windows open it can send you to advertising sites etc. These things can disable normal antiviruses and anti malware. Download "rootkit revealer" from Microsoft or Sysinternals and run it, Go to Task manager and under processes see if there is an oddnamed process sometimes just random letters and or numbers and end process. Then go to Start>run and type in msconfig and click OK, Look under the "startup" tab and uncheck the same process name if it appears there. The registry will need to be cleaned up but normal programs should be able to do that when you have disabled the rogue program.

These things can disable recognised anti-malware programs and system tools like task manager, so you may have to download process explorer or killprocess to stop the process, you need also to rename the malware bytes .exe file to, say for example, xxxx.exe or just copy it to the same folder when it will produce a copy called "copy of..." and run that. That has happened to me a few times. The best thing to do is reinstall Windows after formatting your hard drives. I re install my OS every 1-2 years on my computers to keep them running well. It's a pain, but it works.

It sounds like some sort of virus. A free way to fix this is to do a computer scan with Avast anti-virus, then I would uninstall Firefox, then reinstall. That should work but it will take some time.

yes, go to your c:drive users open your folder - what your user id is when you log into your pc app data local temp and delete everything in there. ps. if you cant see the app data folder, in windows explorer, go to: tools folder options view select the radio button for, 'show hidden files, folders, and drives' the app data folder will show up after doing this.
