How to fix damaged files in XP?
Virus left some damaged folders and files. Explorer cannot see, except highest level folder or file, and shows windos that says "....path\filename is not acessible. Access is denied". Explorer cannot see any lower folders/files in tree structure.
Freeware Unlock program is able to browse tree structure, fixes folders and files if you move them one at a time, restoring attributes or whatever is damaged.
How can I fix the whole tree structure quickly? I have hundreds, and one by one is a killer. Thx.
The viruses were particularly nasty. I had to pull the IDE drive and use a USB exterior drive case to hang it off another computer. 4 virus programs later, it is clean, though I had to delete some files with Unlocker program, as the virus programs couldn't delete them. I thought it was hardware, but several disk test programs conclude hard drive is 100%. This is supported by Unlocker being able to fix folder/file attributes (but only 1 file at a time).
Don't like UNIX or 7, just need to find out how to repair the attributes. I'm too lazy to use UNIX, and don't want to pay for another windows program for an old, lightly used computer. Thanx.!

Fixing your files is easy as 1-2-3 in Windows XP! You can use the programs loaded on your original Windows XP CD to restore corrupted files on your Windows XP disk drive.

Instructions
Things You'll Need:
Computer w/ Windows XP
Windows XP CD

Place your Windows XP CD in CD/DVD drive, and verify that the computer recognizes it by waiting for the AutoLoad to appear, or opening "My Computer" and seeing it in your CD/DVD drive.

Point and click your "Start" menu, and select "Run"
A box will appear that will prompt you for a command.

In the box that appears, type in:
sfc /scannow
The fix will now load, and will hopefully fix all of the corrupted files on your Windows XP drive.
If that does not fix it, you may want to try loading a repair image, or there could potentually be damage to your hard drive that is not fixable on a software level.
You could also attempt a defragment of your hard drive, as fragmentations of files can sometimes produce errors.

You need to know the program that created the files..
once that is installed--the file should open..

If the files are corrupted..due to a hardware issue--you may need to replace hardware..
Like a optical drive that attempted to write to disk/
Or remove hardware..like a floppy drive..or a extra internal drive..

Other than that..who knows..
XP should be replaced with WIN 7.

YOu can run a repair by booting to your XP disk. Also you might want to dump XP and get linux
