What is the best SLR camera out there in the market today?
I work in the SeaWorld photo department, but I am only a photo sales clerk.
I work around the photographers that shoot and they use Nikon D40s.
I've asked around, and I hear that the best cameras out there are the Nikon D90 and the
Nikon D3000.
I have been interested in purchasing a SLR camera, but I am not quite sure which one would be best, and worth my money. Any suggestions I will greatly appreciate.
Thanks.

Best for what? The D3000 is a good starter camera (though I'd get the new D3100 instead.) The D90 is a great compromise between price and pro features. The Nikon D3s is possibly the best sports camera around, due to its large sensor, high ISO performance, and high speed. The Hasselblad mentioned in Hondo's post is a great camera for gallery prints, but its size and low speed make it a horrible sports camera.
It's like asking "what's the best motor vehicle?" Well it depends. If you are a rancher, you want a F350, Dodge Ram, or Chevy Silverado. If you are hauling freight, you want a Freightliner, Kenworth or Peterbilt. If you are on a rally track, you want a Subaru WRX, or a Mitsubishi Evo. If you are a soccer mom, you want a Toyota Sienna.
Anyways, as it is your first DSLR, I'd probably get the Nikon D3100. It looks like a very promising little camera!

The best dSLR camera out there is not necessarily the best camera for you or for most anybody for that matter. The 60MP Hasselblad medium format dSLR is the industry standard. Mere mortals can only admire it from photos. Very few have the select opportunity to touch its skin.
The rest of the world has been divided into C's and N's. Stragglers hide behind their four-thirds, S's and P's. There is no one singular best camera. Basically, they are all the same. Even the mighty Hasselblad is part of this. If you know exactly what you are doing, you can get the same quality of picture whether you use the old Pentax ist DS or the full-framed Canon Mark II.
At the moment, the best value for money is the award-winning Pentax K-x. It has an entry-level price with mid-level features. Best of all, it comes in different flavors. Err..., I mean colors.
