Why don't Home Depot kids workshops teach them how to do electrical work?

On the first Saturday of the month, Home Depot has workshops for kids where they teach them how to do a project. This weekend, the kids built a football-shaped table. For boys, it can be used as a football stand. For girls, a table for a doll house or something.

But I think they should have workshops where they teach kids how to wire things. All they would need is a 6-space sub panel, a few circuit breakers, some wire, boxes, switches, outlets, sockets, and light bulbs. They would follow the instructor as he teaches how to wire up some simple circuits. The child would plug the whole thing in, and have it work. This would be a lot more exciting than the carpentry/woodshop projects they normally do.

I used to play with an old fuse box and all that stuff when I was 7 or 8 years old, as a hobby. I plugged the fuse box into an outlet, and made everything work off there. That's how I taught myself the basics of electrical work.

I have a really good answer for this but I would run afoul of the Yahoo police.

Suffice to say that its really a good thing that Home Depot is sticking to football stands and doll houses. Otherwise, these poor kids, after being shocked too many times, could grow up and ask absolutely ridiculous questions on Yahoo answers.

Because electricity is very dangerous, and while some kids may be responsible enough to know to follow rules and have responsible parents to keep an eye on them, there aren't many. And accidents happen.

What if they had a workshop and then one of those kids goes home and tries to undo a light switch or something just because he thinks he can do it and he missed the part where your supposed to turn the breaker off?

They have electricity classes in high school. They can wait until then.

Yeah, can you see the liability insurance shoot up when some yahoo let's their kid re-wire a blown outlet with the training they got from THD and the trailer goes up in flames that night??

You got to 'play' and taught yourself.. they got 'trainers' to account for.

    Just a thought.

You should also know then that it only takes a half an amp to kill you. Do you think Home depot wants that kind of liability?

Electrical works is too dangerous for kids. They are inherently curious and might experiment beyond what is taught of them.
